What actors/actresses get a raw deal in Hollywood?

As far as I'm concerned, Sean Bean could play a leading role in a film - but aside from the Sharpe TV films, all he's been able to get it seems is supporting roles - Boromir, the hero's partner in Equilibrium, the villain in Goldeneye, etc.

Example: There's a friend of mine, who's boss is a member of the academy. He gets sent all the academy copies of things to be nominated and such. But he hardly gets around to watching them all. Many times, when it comes time to vote in his choices and the deadline comes up.....he does last minute decision like casually asking the babysitter, " Hey, who do you think was better? This guy or this guy?" Then the babysitter would be like "this guy I think".

At long last how Roberto Begnini won a Best Actor Oscar is becoming clear.

Well any female actor over 30 or so tends to get screwed at least in terms of roles offered.

RE: Oscars - The key to understanding how the acadamy members vote, at least for best picture/actor/actress is that they vote for what they think is the kind of movie/performance that other people think ought to win. Which is why "meaningful" movies/performances tend to get oscars while films that will be remembered forever are passed over.

Or with actors they have to be able to "see" the person acting, which is why actors that take roles where their characters have to "suffer" or "overcome" a handicap tend to get oscars. While classic performances are ignored because they weren't "obvious" enough.

Just look at the choices and think "What would appeal to someone looking for something pretentious and "artistic"?" It will almost always guide you to the winner.

Today's "Best Movie No One's Heard Of" is Stormy Monday, in which Sean Bean plays the lead. Mike Figgis directs (his first movie, I think), Sting, Melanie Griffith, Tommy Lee Jones and the Krakow Jazz Ensemble co-star. It came out in the late '80s, and is, imho, a staple of the noir genre ever since. Good soundtrack album, too.

I agree 100%. The man is a great actor. I don't think he gets the shaft, but I also don't think he is overexposed. Remember, he does stage productions also...

I think I have heard of this - probably in connection with Sting, who I used to be a big fan of. Bean's the lead? Cool... I'll have to see if I can rent it.

I’m sure my list will be laughed at but…

Harrison Ford, I’ve yet to see his name nominated for an Oscar

Kate Winslet, got screwed on the Titanic Oscar and really hasn’t done much since.

Keira Knightley, not being nominated for Pirates of the Caribbean was pretty harsh also

I'll try and think of more if no one laughs to hard at me... :)

He is really good as Andy McNab in Bravo Two Zero (1999).

William H. Macy, hands down. The man gets loads of respect from everyone he's worked with (in fact, some celebrity... Baldwin I wanna say... commented on this recently), but he never gets nominations and he's never in the spotlight. The man is just an amazing actor, and barely anyone knows about him.

The Rock. Call me crazy, but he's a pretty good Arnold substitute, and I think he deserves more credit than he gets.

On the opposite end, why the hell is Ashton Kutcher so damn popular? He's a terrible actor (though I haven't seen Butterfly Effect yet). Never liked him on That 70s Show, and can't stand any of his movies. And Punk'd sucks, just like the rest of the MTV jreck. I seriously do not understand it at all.
