What Alignment would this be?

Basically, a woman who has, during her early years of marriage found out she is unable to bear chlidren. She has since been seeking magical knowledge and training to somehow overcome this. As she grew more disconnected from society, she also started to go a little insane in her single-minded pursuit. In a fit of rage, she killed her husband and covered the the evidence to make it look like an accident. Now she is close to reaching her goal, and she is willing to kill anyone who will stop her from get back the ability to bear children.

What alignment would you think this character would be? I am leaning towards NE, but I dont know, I am kinda feeling to sympathetic for her too...... :(

imho it is reasonable to feel sympathy for evil characters, after all we all have a little bit of a dark side within us.

If your character is willing to use all means nessecary to achieve her goals, she is most definately evil, no matter what the goals are.

There is a fine distinction between evil acts and evil characters, and the question is how many evil acts can a character commit before it turns evil? But if your character says in advance that she is willing to commit any act to achieve her goals, that makes her a evil character (according to me)

I'd have to go with LE or NE -- why?

Good vs. Evil axis: Definately on the evil end - motivations are entirely selfish. If you HATE to assign evil to this character, go with Neutral.. but I am still leaning towards Evil on this one.

Law vs. Chaos Axis: The phrase that caught me here was the unyielding _single-minded_ persuit. I find that leaning towards lawful (the concept of solid goal orientation). In my mind, if the character _were_ more chaotic, then there would be some waverance, perhaps other goals as well, that were being worked on simultaneously. But seeing how that is not the case and she is so empatically and fanatically single-minded, I am leaning towards the Lawful bent. Having said all that, since this is all fairly new traits for her to exhibit, perhaps she was not always this way and is really Neutral (on this particular axis) and is shifting towards Lawful at this time.

Anyway, those are my rambles for this A.M. :)

I'd say CE.

Of course, lawful applies to more organized persons, but I don't think this applies here. Any person can have a single important goal, you don't have to be lawful to pursuit it without distractions.

It's more the way you do it, then the fact, that you do it, IMHO.

That sounds Chaotic to me. Could argue Neutral, but I think 9 out of 10 people about whom you could make similar claims would be Chaotic.

That just means you did a good job designing her. Remember, very, very few villains think that what they are doing is imoral. Most of them can try to justify it. Some claim the ends justiofy the means, some claim the means justify the ends. Some claim they're just protecting themselves. But very few admit they are doing wrong and still do it. You've made a confused woman who wants to have a child. This is inherently a sympathetic character. Her evil deeds are a distancing factor, but if you feel sympathy for her, then your players are likely to as well. And that, makes for a powerful, emotionally gripping story. Maybe they can redeem her. Maybe they can't. Maybe she'll get her child and spend the rest of her life in misery over her past deeds. Maybe they redeem her only to see her kill herself in a fit of guilt. It's a good character.
