What alternate base classes are you using?

The Holy Warrior from Book of the Righteous is quality. And by writing up a couple extra domains with associated Holy Warrior powers, it became an unHoly Warrior too.

I'm all about Oriental Adventures, the Psionics Handbook, and Final Fantasy d20, but I don't include them all...

In OA, I don't allow samurai (they're fighters, get over it), or Wu Jen (they're wizards, get over it). I don't allow the Samurai from the Complete Warrior, either (it's a fighter, get over it). I don't allow the AU classes, either, though I have the book. Testament and Nyambe are the same way: I own them, and you're welcome to mine them for ideas, but I don't think a seperate class is nessecary in most cases.

But pretty much everything else from OA, the PsiHB, and FFd20 is allowed. I'm not sure if 'monster classes' count, but I allow them, too.

But, by eliminating the samurai in both its incarnations, don't you make the refined warrior concept (an important part of the samurai mystique) less viable?

Just curious.

As for myself, I'm pretty much open to allowing anything - though I confess to being leery of many of the "monster classes" from Savage Species. The book did nothing for me, so I sold it on Ebay. :)

Although I am not currently a DM, my main DM allows core classes from the PHB, DMG (if you really want to play an NPC class), OA, Mini's Book, Monte Cook's Ranger (until 3.5 came out), Savage Species on a case-by-case basis, and basically just about anything from a WOTC source as long as he has had a chance to look at it first. (Although PrCs are on a case-by-case basis). He also will consider anything else, but he has to look it over first and retains the right to modify.

My other DM allows PHB, DMG, most Savage Species (some creatures don't exist in his homebrew world), not OA only because we are not playing in the correct part of the world, and anything Monte Cook or Mongoose Publishing (some monty core classes in there, BTW). He, too, will work with you to create something that fits your character if you wish.

So far, I've had pretty good luck with DMs... :D

I allow most WotC non-core classes, including the psionic classes, the quartet from Miniatures Handbook and the OA classes. The Mystic from the DLCS is off-limits, however, on grounds of being dull. The Noble I would allow, if someone asked to play one... I've forbidden the Rokugan ninja, but the inkyo and the courtier would be allowed.

I also allow all good-aligned Savage Species monster classes.

And still, all they will play is core classes, or whine incessantly about playing a ninja...

I actually let in the Ninja class from the Rokugan web supplement (a decent one), but the Final Fantasy Ninja does pretty well, so no need for it yet. :)

It could seem that way, but there's a lot of ways to accomplish this through the rules without having those alt-fighters in the mix...a Paladin does a decent job as a refined warrior (and mandates it, in fact). A fighter could take levels in Aristocrat...and IMC, "Bards" can be lawful, so honorable noble knights can still mutliclass in 'culture' classes. So Paladin/Bards, or Fighter/Bards can make up the courtiers and shogunates of my world, at most with some sort of "knight-esque" PrC if warranted...though usually a straight Paladin does the trick very nicely.

IMC, Paladins aren't just holy warriors...they're pinnacles of chivalry and nobility, legendary kings of old. Clerics are holy warriors...or Cleric/Fighters. :)

Me?

Adept (pumped up)
Akashic (AU)
Aristocrat (pumped up)
Bard
Barbarian
Champion (AU, subclasses of death, freedom, justice, knowledge, life, magic, power, secret)
Cleric (tweaked)
Druid
Expert
Fighter
Greenbond (AU)
Healer (MH)
Mageblade (AU)
Magister (AU)
Marshall (MH)
Minstrel
Monk
Oathsworn (AU)
Paladin (tweaked between BoHM's and 3.5's, plus the NG and CG variants, which are however limited to only one deity)
Psion
Psychic Warrior
Ranger (paths of esoterica, archery, riding, sneak attack, tellury, trapfinding, two-weapon fighting)
Rogue
Runethane (AU)
Samurai (tweaked OA, clans of dwarven nations and halfling communities)
Shaman (OA)
Sohei (OA)
Sorcerer (tweaked with bloodlines of dragon, fey, elemental, celestial, fiendish, and sphinx ancestry -- sphinx IMC are slightly different from the norm)
Stormlord (homebrew)
Totem Warrior (AU, totems of bat, bear, bull, dolphin, fox, hawk, horse, lion, lizard, owl, raven, shark, stag, wolf)
Unfettered
Warmain
Warmage
Wizard
Witch (AU, subclasses of beast, decay, dreams, dune, iron, mind, mysteries, plant, sea, shadows, wind, winter)
Wu Jen (tweaked OA, elements changed to be air, earth, fire, water, and magic)
Zealot (homebrew)

Most names have been changed. First, because I need French names, and second for flavor. Wu Jen are "elementalists", samurais are "clanwardens", warmains are "knights", etc.

For each, I've tried to make taking a prestige class an agonizing class -- in other words, I've tried to keep the interest in the class going with higher levels.

OA : all classes
Mongoose's Power Classes (Assassin, Exorcist, Noble, Knight, Hedge Wizard, Artificer, Explorer), shaman, and EA variants (like the chaos mage)
Green Ronin's witch, avatar and thaumaturge (from Armies of the Abyss)
AEG's variant rangers from Wilds

I plan to get the power class I couldn't find yet, GR's unholy warrior and that should be enough for now ;-)

I allow all the PsiHB classes, all the OA ones, and all but the Favored Soul from the MiniHB.
In the games I run...we currently have two Samurai and a Psychic Warrior. Even IF the Samurai is 'just a fighter' the PCs sure don't play them like 'just a fighter'. ;)
