What are the 10 best d20/D&D companies out there?

I can't really do a top 10 but I will say that
WOTC
Mongoose
Green Ronin
Troll Lord Games(I loved the CC boxed set, can't wait for the full books)
Bad Axe Games(still waiting for my Gnomes book though)
are among my favorites.

Hi-

The Gamelords-
An old 1st edition AD&D company, I still use their Thieves Guild Modules just because nothing else comes close to being as useful.
Chaosium-
Their old Thieves World Boxed set is one of the best D&D products ever produced and yup, I still use it for my FR campaign.
Games Workshop-
Designers of Warhammer FRP and granted not D&D, but very, very useful nonetheless. Enemy Within Campaign is perhaps the best Campaign ever written for any RPG and ranks up there in my book anyway, with WotC's City of the Spider Queen.
Paizo-
Excellent scenarios and source materiel at an inexpensive price.
Wizards of the Coast-
75% of their products have been spot on like FR and Eberron! The other 25% like their splat books have been very dissapointing.
Bastion Press-
There Oathbound campaign harkens back to the days of Planescape and is a very well done resource indeed.
Goodman Games-
Some really nifty low level adventures that remind me of old 1E modules. Very basic, but very useful.
AEG-
Their Spycraft stuff is just awesome! Plus you can plunder their stuff for some really great idea's for a city adventure for D&D.

Well, thats my top eight, I glanced at my table to see what I use to create my meliu and the above products seem to always be in use.

AEG has no plans to do anymore one-word titles, instead doing Spycraft driven and Warlords d20 lines. . . . Rumor (and I stress that word) has it that Fantasy Flight is done with their Legends & Lairs line for the forseeable future.

This is really too bad to hear, these are two of my favorite d20 publishers. Outside of WotC products, AEG and Fantasy Flight were the only publishers I would regularly consider purchasing from. While the editing was occasionally a bit weak, I loved the one-word titles. As for Fantasy Flight, I have really enjoyed the Legends & Lairs stuff, looks like I'll have to pick up the gaps in my collection soon.

Honestly I think the whole d20 slowdown is due to the fact that Mike Mearls is (only, AFAIK) working for Malhavoc now. ;)

(I think Mike wrote like 5 of the last 6 Legends & Lairs books and had a hand in many, if not most of, the one-word books from AEG.)

So, if you want the d20 boom to start anew, just convince Mike he should be a "full-time" freelancer again. :D

I talked to MonkeyGod at Origins and they told me then that Frost & Fur was their last release. Financially, it didn't make sense to spend four times the effort and money to produce a roleplaying game that only sold a few hundred copies at best when they could make board games under their other name, Face 2 Face Games, at a fraction of the cost and have sales that numbered in the thousands. They also confirmed it again to me at Gen Con when they said Arms & Armor v3.5 would be the only 3.5 collection of weapons and armor because they were not going to do a 3.5 version of From Stone to Steel.

Of course, MonkeyGod isn't the only company no longer producing d20 materials. To my knowledge, Atlas only has one or two products in development and they are done with d20 supplements for the time being. AEG has no plans to do anymore one-word titles, instead doing Spycraft driven and Warlords d20 lines. Fast Foward is done completely. Living Imagination is done and is going back to focusing on their LARP business. Rumor (and I stress that word) has it that Fantasy Flight is done with their Legends & Lairs line for the forseeable future. There are also a couple of other companies on the bubble who I expect to call it quits in the near future.

As far as an official notice, don't hold your breath. I doubt any company will make a public announcement saying they are giving up. No one wants to admit defeat and many will probably try to get back in the game if things pick up again. :)

As far as I know it, Fantasy Flight Games is still working on some D20 material...Midnight, from what I understand, is selling strongly....AFAIK, they've got products on the schedule coming out for next year even. Not sure about their other lines though.

In no particular order...

Privateer Press is very solid and IMO, would make the Top 5 ahead of Mongoose and even Malhavoc (but just barely). Their biggest drawback is their release schedule.
Troll Lord Games gets a nod from me just because of the upcomming C&C and their close working relationship w/ EGG. I can't wait to get my hands on C&C.
White Wolf has a vast selection of quality product and is an easy pick for a Top 10.
Goodman Games makes my Top 10 on the strength of their Dungeon Crawl series (other than #9 which has only nostalgiac value).
AEG and FFG make it in as a tie due to their incredible settings. Midnight and Rokugan are easily my favorite d20 settings (though L5R is a legacy setting). AEG produces some wonderful (though poorly edited) books. FFG's Crown of Shadows (for Midnight) is one of the most entertaining modules I've used in over 26 years of gaming; great story arc and a very immersive introduction to the setting.

Finally, I'd add Paizo to the list, especially in light of the new direction that Dungeon seems to be going. Goodman games & Necromancer games will still be my favorites for mods, but it looks like Paizo is comming on strong w/ more material and a new adventure path in the works.

One thing about Privateer is that they're saying that the release schedule will improve. They've apparently got other products that are almost ready, but they couldn't release until they got the main campaign setting done. If this is true, and they're finishing layout etc. of the second half of the campaign setting, and it actually comes out before 2006, we might begin to see a more regular release schedule..

I'd probably say my favorites (roughly in the order listed), and the companies I buy product from are:

Mahavloc Press
Green Ronin
Privateer Press
Fantasy Flight Games
Wizards of the Coast
Sovereign Press
AEG (Swashbuckling Adventures, L5R)
Sword and Sorcery Studios

That being said, however, I don't know that I mind too much if Atlas drops off the d20 market. They have an excellent stable of games that should compete for my dollar with non-d20 systems.

I have no problem with a company choosing to focus on things like Feng Shui and Unknown Armies when those serve to complement my d20 playing so well.

That said, the reverse is also true, while I understand their motivations given the status of Oriental Adventures from WotC, I can't say that I'm happy that AEG is abandoning their d20 support for Rokugan.

That setting worked very well with d20 and even, I would argue, better with d20 than it did with their own roll and keep.

Furthermore, I would say that this list is really pretty arbitrary, I mean, I could list the publications that I use most, but I am happiest with d20 when I am able to find publications to fit my specific interests and whims so I range pretty widely in my purchases, am happy with the products I get, and sad when a company goes down that could have made the product I needed to fit the mood that month.

L5R is moving away from D20? That's too bad...guess no more reason to buy books from them :(

Oh and just to stay on topic. Here are my favored d20 companies, in order.

1) WotC
2) AEG
3) Fantasy Flight (even without Legends & Lairs, Midnight still rocks)
4) Arthaus/Sword Sorcery (Ravenloft stuff)
5) Green Ronin
6) Necromancer Games (adventures not so much, Tome of Horrors oh yeah)
7) Malhavoc Press
8) EN Publishing
9) Avalanche Press (basically because of my campaign world, see link

WotC
Green Ronin
Bad Axe
Necromancer
Fiery Dragon
AEG
Fantasy Flight
RPGobjects
Skeleton Key

I'd also say Chainmail Bikini, but I worked with James a little, so I won't. ;)
BTW, Chainmail Bikini is out of the industry semi-indefinately due to economics of a non-D20 industry variety. I have no idea what impact the current environment would have on the probability of a re-entry. I can't see it helping, but I can see it being a non-issue. James (Gargoyle) has poked his head in a few times lately, so maybe he'll comment.
