What are the big non-d20/non-D&D Game Systems?

This is a fascinating thread.

I think Call of Cthulhu needs to be mentioned, as it is widely popular. It is clearly in an "upper quartile" containing systems that have somewhat widespread play. I believe the game is still actively supported, and it's very popular among those who play it.

I am hoping that Hollow Earth Expeditions catches hold, as it's absolutely gorgeous and looks like a lot of fun to play.

Dammit, yes, Call of Cthulhu. D'oh. :o How did I miss that one? Maybe it's because I haven't gone anywhere near the game for some time now. Yeah yeah, that must be it. :hmm:

From what I'm gathering, Trial of Cthulhu is the sequeal to Call of Cthulhu? Are they the same version of the game?

Thanks everyone - the information so far has been great! :)

Hey, I know I am going against the OP's criteria. That is because I think they are the wrong criteria. If he wants to broaden his gaming horizons then he should think outside the box that he has imposed on himself in the OP.

Thanks, Particle_Man. I'll take a look at those, but didn't want to swamp myself right from the start!

Nope. Trail of Cthulhu is a variant take on the mythos and the investigative style of the Call of Cthulhu game. They are seperate games, as far as I know.

Trail by Pelgrane uses the Gumshoe system, Call uses the BRP system. Trail is new, Call is old. Trail is set in the pulp 30s (mostly), Call is mostly 20s. Trail has Howard as a key influence, Call is Lovecraft and the dude who started Arkham PRess (whose name escapes me...).

PS: Both are worth getting!
