What are the biggest threats?

What do you think the biggest threat to D&D 4E?

IOW, what do you think will the biggest mistake WoTC could make with D&D 4E given the info we know now?

Me, i'm a little worried about the direction the game is going in the tactical departemnt. It sounds like minis will be an even bigger part of the game.

I also worry about the design tema as a whole. I trust Mearls and thing if he was in charge this game would no doubt be D&D. The other guys, I'm not so sure of.

I really dislike that too, but I don't think that's a threat to the game per se.

-The antiquated, over-powered, Gygaxian magic/spell system.

-The clunky turning rules.

-Alignment having a mechanical affect on play.

-Elven secret door weirdness.

-Random hit points and ability scores.

Some of these were almost direct cut & pastes from previous editions.

I'll get back with some more (I'm at work)…

And for good reason; for many people, they help define a game as D&D. Not to say that they all need to stick around as a result, but I can hardly fault them being carried forward.

I agree that their biggest risk is in delaying the SRD. That helps buoy the industry, bringing in new players.

I thought that the Spell system & Alignment were going to be changed for 4E?
