D&D 5E What are the highlights of D&D 5th edition for you?

What was the highlight of 5E? Personally for me, the fact that it taught me how to read what a "D4" and all those other fancy Dice Numbers and technical terminology associated with it.

Which pretty much trickled down to teaching me how to read DND from the current edition down to the previous editions.

Like, I ACTUALLY understood how to play Table Top RPGs after that.

Crazy, I know. But ya see, nobody in my circle ever played/had DND when I was growing up. And while I "knew" what it was, I didn't really start getting into it, reading it wise, until I had purchased the 3.0 Sword and Fist book, reading Gamefaqs guides of Baldur's Gates 1/2, Icewind Dale 1/2, Planescape, and limewire. That's when the seeds were planted for sure. But it was via 5E that it pretty much flourished.

So ya, 5E taught me how to read D20 systems and what not

The real highlight for me was losing enough interest in the current edition of D&D for the first time in decades and being able to 1) really explore some other systems that weren't just D&D adjacent, and 2) diving back into previous editions and rediscovering parts that I hadn't explored before. Seriously, I never imagined I would ever play a straight 4e "Keep on the Shadowfell" adventure to completion in 2023! And it was so much more fun for me than any of the games I played with 5e. The irony, of course, is it probably would not have happened if it wasn't for 5e! ;)


the Incomparably Shrewd and Clever
Two main mechanics stand out to me: Advantage/Disadvantage and Bounded Accuracy. Ditching most of the fiddly bonuses/penalties that could be a pain to track, and tamping down the numbers escalation game have both been a breath of fresh air to me.

With 5th edition reaching its 10th anniversary and the last two adventures before the 2024's revision soon to be released, I invite you to revisit the last decade of D&D and think about this question: what were the highlights of 5th edition? The best adventures, the best sourcebooks, the innovations it brought to the table you want think really made an impact?

I'll start with the obvious: Lost Mine of Phandelver is already a classic and will be remembered in the same lines as adventures like Keep in the Borderlands and Ravenloft.
Should I assume you're just talking about WotC here?

I like how easily it inspires house rules, and the ease with which it handles said house rules.
I like the flat math.
I like the 3pp products its existence has resulted in.
Yup. The best thing about WotC 5e is all the 3pp folks have made as a result of it being here, either in support of it or simply in response.

I have three more:

1. It was the first RPG I was able to get my kids interested in enough to introduce them to the hobby.

2. Being irritated with its shortcomings led me to get into houseruling extensively, which has been very rewarding, and it also led me to the OSR.

3. Its existence means that official D&D doesn't end with 4e, which I never could get behind and which I didn't want to be the final word on the game (as much as it's a well-designed game in its own right).
