From the old Peter Atkinson letter about the shape of TSR when Wizards bought it, there was a warehouse of 1st edition books "palleted as if to go" still around that apparently were pulped. That was 1998 or '99, so they had been laying about for at least 10 years. I can't say for certainty about 2E (especially since they inherited whatever TSR had in stock at the time), or for 3E or 4E, but it seems Wizards was a lot more cautious about making sure they didn't end up in a similar situation and likely stopped printing books for an edition even before the new was out so they wouldn't end up with overstock.Interesting that its sales remain brisk enough to keep it in print even after spending big bucks to replace it with a new edition. Did TSR keep the 1e PHB in print at all after releasing 2e's rulebooks? Did WotC keep printing the core 3e books after v.3.5 hit?
If they're still printing 2014 Core books, I'm shocked (but strangely happy)!
