1. Ptolus (Malhavoc)
2. Wilderlands Box Set (Necromancer Games)
3. Rappan Athuk Reloaded (Necromancer Games)
4. Castle Whiterock (Goodman Games)
5. Oathbound Campaign Setting (Bastion Press)
6. Fiendish Codex I (WotC)
7. Gazetteer of the Known Realms (Goodman Games)
8. Tome of Horrors 3.5 (pdf) (Necromancer Games)
9. Book of Fiends (Green Ronin)
10. Tomb of Abysthor (Necromancer Games)

The very best:
Player's Handbook II
DMG II
Expanded Psionics Handbook
Fiend Folio, MMII, Savage Species
Complete Arcane
Complete Warrior
Complete Adventurer
Complete Divine
Unearthed Arcana
Spell Compendium
Fiendish Codex, I and II
Heroes of Horror
Liber Mortis
Lords of Madness

As far as I'm concerned, Complete Psionic, Complete Mage, Complete Champion, and Complete Scoundrel are stinky doo doo. Most of the Races books are mediorce, except for Races of Destiny, which is atrociously bad. MMIII is fair, MMIV is pretty lame.

In case anyone ever asks you what the worst 3rd edition book is, it's Weapons of Legacy.

If it's only D&D related you want, shouldn't you have put this in a D&D subforum? THis is mostly for d20 games OTHER than D&D. Like Mutants & Masterminds, Star Wars, d20 Modern, etc.

Anyway, notwithstanding, I think some of the must haves include the Freeport Trilogy; the first ever module series for third edition (IIRC, they beat out the WotC modules, didn't they? And they're still excellent.) If you like that, I can certainly recommend the new Freeport book, although as a system neutral book, it's not limited just to D&D obviously.

My favorite monster books of all time for D&D are third party books; the two Monsternomicons from Privateer Press and the Book of Fiends from Green Ronin. When I'm turning to a new campaign to run, they are always required reading as campaign building elements.

I literally couldn't game in d20 anymore if it wasn't for Unearthed Arcana. It's given me so many options to fix things that I didn't like, that several of them are default standard rules for me now.

Although it's neck and neck with Freeport as favorite setting book, I should give a nod to Five Fingers too. Great setting book. Tons of fun to read, tons of material to use.
