What are the pros and cons of the different campaign settings?

I'm impressed this thread got to 8 pages without it devolving into a flamewar considering the topic. For those of you who consider this a bash-Kalamar thread I'd like to say that I think this thread has sold me into at least taking a look at the setting. It sounds like it has a lot of the aspects that made me fall in love with Harn.

Well considering your group I can see that. But I will say they will miss out on being used as pasties by the Cult of the Ancients. ;)

Werner, yeah well that's all well and good. But you'd better NOT quit your SL committments! :p :)

Sounds like an excellent choice for your group. Internal consistency and thoughtfully-done world-building is Kalamar's bigtime strength.

Flavour you can certainly inject on your own - assuming you don't find more than I have built-in (I'm still looking, don't stone me).

In fact, once you get your campaign ideas sorted out, please post them - perhaps your inspiration will help me unlock my inner Kalamar lover!

I already gave my thoughts, Merek, but I would like to hear how it goes. If you feel the need to change though, my door and Ashrem's door are open as well.

It will be a while before we get there! The party is 1st-2nd level currently, and engaged in the series of events that will ultimately reveal the existance of the dragon artifact thingies (cool name as yet unthought-of).

Of course, if you all subscribe to my story hour, you'll be able to follow along in real time! Now that school is over, I'll be able to update more often (currently 2 sessions behind).

You can check it out now for a glimpse of to what I'm about to expose the poor, unsuspecting world of Kalamar... heh heh heh...

Whoohoo! :D I'm glad you like what you've seen so far, Merak (and big thanks for planning to buy the books rather than use the pirated copies you mentioned!). There are several other good settings to choose from, so the competition was tough. I hope Kalamar can live up to all your expectations!

I liked your idea of how you plan to bring the characters from one setting to another. Depending on how much culture shock you want to give your players, I might suggest far northern Brandobia over the Vohven Jungle (colder and mostly uninhabited, as opposed to hot and densely populated with jungle animals and monsters, though few peoples). Just keep in mind that, as they move north of the Vohven, that the Isle of Svimohzia is like Maori and Zulu bushmen + 1,000 years of civilization. Great stone cities, architecture and culture, not straw huts and primitives with bones through their noses. :)

If you haven't checked it out yet, I suggest dropping by the Kalamar forums on our messageboards. Everyone's very friendly and willing to chat and answer questions. Flames and trolls of any kind are almost unheard of. Also, it's another good place to post your campaign notes in the Story Hour section.

I think Kalamar is exactly the right choice for you. It's really a very well done world, and the products are all excellent.

We're expecting to hear all about this in a Story Hour you know.

Despite a few reservations I have about races and classes, I think Kalamar is a good choice. You can't beat the level of detail, "verisimilitude," "plausible impossibility" and internal consistency.
