What are the rules for?

That tracks. But  how the proposed rule handles it is just as important.

Since we're defining things: mechanics exist to fix cars. Mechanisms are the systems you get when rules interact.

While you're not wrong, "game mechanics" as a term for rules system has propagated far enough now I think trying to fix it is a fool's errand.

Same here.

Then we simply can't discuss this, because the timescale of my experience is such that no one is liable to be able to provide me a convincing amount of counter-data. That doesn't mean its impossible you're right, but it does mean you're not going to have any wy to convince me you are. And presumably vice versa.

Somebody's probably written a TTRPG focused on simulating trade, where you might be operating a vessel visiting different ports and exchanging goods of various sorts. If so, weight seems like one reasonable constraint in terms of determining how much cargo (and other stuff, like food and water etc) you can actually bring along.
Most of the big name companies' space opera games... including Traveller (GDW/IG/Mongoose), Space Opera (FGU), Star Wars (WEG — in GG6 — and FFG — EotE core rules), Alternity (TSR), Web of Stars (Web Games), ALIENS RPG (Leading Edge), ALIEN (Free League), Coriolis: The Third Horizon (Free League, Bulldogs (don't recall the publisher, uses FATE 2.0), Mercator (a traveller variant from a 3PP), Arrowflight (Deep 7 - see the Island Nations sourcebook)... Oh, yeah, even D&D (GAZ series - two of them have trade mechanics).

Ironically, Firefly RPG doesn't have trade rules... but Firefly the Boardgame has mission rules! (I highly recommend FFtBG as a mission generator for FFRPG).

Don't know why you think I think we're talking about dungeons and dragons. That game is like the Ur example of having no interesting options in combat without magic lol

Maybe so, but taking your wrestling to a swordfight (or worse, a gunfight) as a regularly useful tactic is still not anything most games are going to do. Even in some incarnations of D&D it'd have been pretty dumb. Unsurprisingly, the places it shows up most commonly IME is the one where its not (superhero combat).
