What are your guy's thoughts on Alternity?

I played a lot of basic Alternity when it was fairly new, and enjoyed it. Going back through it now, I'm not sure how well it has aged. I'm not sure whether it just needs another streamlining pass (all the rules baggage attached to skill ranks via rank benefits), or if parts are just fundamentally flawed. The situation die modifiers make for weird statistical distributions and odd increments in difficulty, and I don't know if damage tiers mix in interesting ways. I think it works fine when everyone only has O-quality weapons and defense, but I think it starts behaving oddly when you mix in heavy weapons, power armor/vehicles, and other stuff of varying scale. I'm still not even entirely sure what a weapon with high wound damage vs. a weapon with low mortal damage is even supposed to represent, fluff-wise, and that makes homebrewing difficult.
