D&D 5E What classes for a 6th and possibly 7th party member?

Since you're making the additional pregens with the backstories to consider, I would suggest (interchangeably but with the cleric getting a slight edge):

- Cleric, ranged crossbow build (acolyte background for a priest-forced-adventurer backstory)
- Fighter, dex two-weapon fighting build (criminal background, the opposite to the noble defender.. should provide good roleplay hooks)
- Rogue, ranged build (soldier background, the ranged fighter may be too similar, but ranged sneak attack sniper could be played as more sinister)

As there are two fighters in the starter set, one human and one elf I would add more human pre-gens for the other three basic classes, so a classic Gandalf-type human folk-hero wizard, a classic Lathander human acolyte cleric and perhaps a human soldier-type spy/scout rogue. This way you can have the classic archetypes as humans too.

IIRC both fighter pregens will be human. Your suggestion is still a good one though.

Well since my first group of five would be Rogue, Rogue, Rogue, Rogue, and Rogue. The next two characters would be... lets see...

Maybe it should be switched up a bit. I know:

Rogue and then for spice, a Rogue.

Maybe switch out the third Rogue with a Rouge :p

The first five are the pregen characters. From the Basic Set rules I would do the following.
  1. Human Fighter melee build, noble
  2. Dwarf Cleric, life domain
  3. Elf Wizard, evoker
  4. Human Fighter, archer build
  5. Halfling rogue, thief build
  6. Elf Rogue, thief
  7. Human Cleric, life
  8. Dwarf Wizard, evoker

At 7 players they will need an extra cleric, for the healing. Elf makes a good rogue, and Dwarf casting in armor will get some of the old school players out of their comfort zone.

I second this list. You could make the Elf Rogue the Pregen Wizard's sibling, or the Human Cleric from the same order in Waterdeep to double-up aspects of the background (while picking whatever mechanical background you chose.)

I'd make the 2nd Cleric light-armoured just to make 'em more different.

You could make a light-armoured elf cleric with a high dex and a finesse weapon and have them be related to the wizard, instead if you only need 1 extra. Pick some different spells than the Dwarf Cleric. Hmm...
