What details do you miss from older editions?

Quick NPC generation, and slim monster books with 900+ monsters in them. And few crappy monsters - the dross ratio in 1e's MM & MM2 is very low compared to their 3e equivalents, I still use a lot of conversions from 1e MM2. Admittedly 1e FF did have some crap, as well as gems - that guy who created the Slaad & Githyanki ought to have got royalties!

I also liked 18th level Archmages with 33 hp!

Definately the whole leveling and multiclassing concept. In 3.x it is absolutely nerfing to multiclass. Also, the standard XP tables means that all things being equal, the whole PC group will all be of the same level.

The move in 3.5 to heavily base things on miniatures annoys me to no end. Combat is now static imho. Two figurines standing in squares whacking at eachother. The whole movement / combat rules suck as far as I am concerned, and I will never use them in this way.

No way! That was a ridiculous feature! I'm glad it's gone. It only promoted dungeon-crawling if your campaign was about bashing monsters and stealing their loot.

Anyway . . .

I miss the "true" Greyhawk default world as presented by Gygax -- not TSR/WotC's interpretation after Gygax left (circa 1988?).

I also miss the drawings of topless drow priestesses plunging sacrificial daggers into bound victims. I miss the pentagrams, too.

1. Books that were still useful after 5 years.

2. All the wonderful not-so-crunchy material printed for reading enjoyment.

3. Planescape. The art was fabulous.

4. The lack of ECLs. Most ECL races are not worth it beyond the first few levels. Paying for effective levels without getting such basics as HD, BAB, & saves really blows.

5. Modules. Yes, I know that Eberon has module plans, but I have absolutely no intention of ever buying Eberon. I have more than enough campaign setting books already.

Even though I despite OD&D and AD&D and 2eAD&D, the one thing it had that I did like...okay, two things, were Clerical Spheres of influence and Skills and Powers and all the options skills and powers allowed. That's it. The rest can burn and be scrapped off the planet and devoid of any existence whatsoever.
