What did you like about Warhammer Fantasy?

Did Wayne Reynolds used to do GW art? Wow, he must have changed his style drastically, as I can't think of a single image from GW sources that looks at all like his D&D stuff.

Mark Gibbons did some great art. The guys they have now are also very good at getting the "dark" feeling out.

Of course, I'm talking about the art in the wargame now. I don't know what the RPG book looks like anymore; haven't seen it in some time.

WAR is a fairly common, and still often published artist for Warhammer Monthly, the monthly comic of the GW worlds. He is doing a Kal Jerico (a series he seems to do the most of) currently in Warhammer Monthly. I was suprised when I saw his work in 3E. Also, check out some of the art at Sabertooth's site: www.sabertoothgames.com . There are a lot of Warhammer artists doing cards with new art for the Warhammer ccgs (with Wayne Reynolds, Adrian Smith and Clint Langley among others).

Oh, the comic book. Yeah, I haven't read that much, so I guess I wouldn't recognize him from that. I was thinking of the actual GW produced Warhammer products. Black Library has a completely different style, for the most part.

My bad for not clarifying. I do like the newer gritty style in the codex books and the army books. I don't play Chaos, but bought the new books because of the art. WAR's colour work for Sabertooth is pretty impressive, too.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: World of Warhammer Encyclopedia

I've bought WFRP main book, Realms of Sorcery, and this World of Warhammer book, all as ideas fodder for my D&D campaign. If I could only keep one, It would probably be the World of Warhammer book. Although, to be fair, I'm a fantasy art nut, and the art gives this book the edge over the core rulebook for me. Purely on ideas and content, the core book would probably win out. RoS was a waste of money for me.
Thanks for the rundown, War Golem. I may have to put both the core rulebook and the encyclopedia on the ol' Christmas list. They've both served you well as idea fodder, right?

The artwork is what initially drew me into Warhammer (both RPG and FB). I also liked the minis, of course.

It always seemed to me that Warhammer was more about getting into skirmishes and inflicting maximum carnage than it was about avoiding violence and running away like a scared little girl. Perusing this thread, it actually took a little time for it to sink in that a lot of people really think that Warhammer characters--which are for the most part combat archetypes--are intended to be as helpless and fragile as the journalists and college professors are in a Call of Cthulhu campaign.

Maybe it's just the way it's been GM'ed for each of us. Since there's no equivalent of Challenge Ratings, the GM has no guidelines about what to throw at players. Since a lot of GM's come from years of playing AD&D, they might just draw on those experiences, not fully appreciating what the end result might be (TPK's). Then again, I've never had a lot of complaints about starting a new character in WHRPG...

As for any notion expressed that the Warhammer world is immutable, and for that reason can't be adapted to d20, don't make me laugh, guys. The boys at GWS feel free to change anything they like about the world when it suits them. If you play WH Fantasy Battles, you couldn't help but be aware of all the stuff that has been changed or dropped over the years.

Mmh, Warhammer.

I liked the setting itself.

I liked the way evil still managed to be evil, even while world was very 'grey'-themed.

I liked the way bad guys could win, and they oft did too.

I liked Chaos. (though I never did like it in-character)

I liked art, especially that found in 'Slaves to Darkness'.

Oh, and all those exiting games I've played in that setting still remain foundly in my memories.
