That's exactly how I feel too. I am however also open for ideas the DM might have, but I get turned off if the PC's are able to be held responsible for fundementally changing the world. I just think it's completely out of scale.
It would seem in my eyes that they are doing things that would normally take even the gods a long time to do and as soon as my PC becommes a god I cease to have that underdog feeling I like about being in a heroic adventure. I don't care if fundamental changes DO happen as long as the PCs are just spectators/victims and not the cause.
It's also a requirement that the world in which I adventure can accomodate almost anything from the official rules, so a world in which there is no magic (or significantly less) or in which there are no dwarves (or any other standard race) also kinda turns me off.
