What do you do when your character dies?

On Friday night my brand new WOT character which I had just made for that game. 2nd Level Woodsperson with a Masterpiece Two-Rivers Longbow. So I like this character but then minutes before the end of the session in the first combat of that session, he dies by a Magic Grenade from one of his own party members!

I liked the character and am contemplating making the same one again but perhaps a different variation.

What do all do when your character dies, make a completely different one? How many people make similar characters?

It depends...

Most of the time it depends on how much fun I was having with that particular character. If I was playing a Cleric because there wasn't another healer type in the party, and I wasn't enjoying it, I will switch to a different class and encourage another player to take his turn as the medic.

This hasn't been as much of a problem lately as we now have a Paladin in the party with the Leadership feat. His only follower/cohort is a Cleric who fills the medic role nicely. It's amazing how hard the party works to keep this NPC alive. :)

If I was having a lot of fun with the character, and it doesn't hurt the party by re-introducing another similar character, I do it. The big upside is that there is usually a bunch of 'extra' gear that the new character can walk right into. That isn't always the case if you bring in a radically different character.

I don't see any problem with playing almost the same character again, in that case. It's all about fun!

All my characters have social networks (either families, guilds or associations (eg Church/Orders of Knights to which they belong/affiliate) so if one dies his brother/ apprentice/ friend can be moved up to take his role

sometimes they will have similar classes (eg both were Clerics trained in the same temple orphanage)

or they may have different classes but the same associates (eg PC 2 is a Fighter who worked as a Temple Guard in the Temple the deceased cleric was trained in or perhaps he too was one of the orphans)

This way you can have a different character but use most of the former characters 'knowledge' and even personality (it was their similar personalities that made them friends)

You do what I did. Play a male Channeler. And overchannel. Lots. Then *really* roleplay that madness.

As a 2nd level male channeler I did over 100 points of damage in one round. (Admitadly I did overchannel some before hand to make those giant grenades!)

Well, this is cheesy, so it depends:

If your game is serious, you probably shouldn't do this, 'cause it'll hurt the story.

If your game is lighthearted dungeon delving, go for it.

I think it could work in even a serious game having a similar style character hook up with the party. As long as the character is physically different and has different attributes at the very least.

HAHA !!! This line really made me laugh... if the "medic" goes down you guys probably retreat and protect him immediately !!

I switch to another character idea. Depending how long I played the orginal it may or may not be the same. If it's at low level I'll probably pick something different. There are so many characters I'd like to try out that it makes it hard to choose.
