What do you get out of signatures?

I don't really have a problem with sigs in general. I actually enjoy the goofy ones that I see, though I honestly rarely even notice them at all.

My only real pet peeves are wide graphical sigs that make me scroll right-left, and most especially sigs that are in red type that look like mod posts.

EDIT: And I would point out that a git-r-done t-shirt is better than a git-r-done forehead tattoo.

I like a couple sigs, the Galdalf quote about the afterlife is nice. Someone's has a pic with an old guy asking about bannannannananas in ears. Nifft's is good, because long sigs annoy me, even if the post itself is long.

I'm not a huge fan of sigs that are just more volleys in an edition war mindset. In fact, I don't get even mildly offensive signatures. It's like getting one of the seven dirty words tattoed on you, are you sure you want that just out there for everyone to see, even when it's not appropriate?

Luckily there aren't too many bad sigs here on Enworld.

I appreciate .sigs, actually. Really dumb ones are often the most useful to me.

I'm not ashamed to admit that I make snap judgments sometimes as to whose posts are worth reading, and .sigs are a big help to that. (Just for instance, if someone quotes himself in his .sig, I'll tend to ignore him from that point on.) It's probably unfair in some ways, but the Internet is vast and making quick choices seems to get me to better parts of it.

It does amaze me how many folks are unaware of the basic tenets of .sig etiquette, though. On the other hand, it shouldn't amaze me ... I'm old, and I was there when the rules were carved in non-scaleable black Times New Roman on a gray background with no in-line images.

...or they are inside jokes from their own gaming group or circle of friends. Is it funny if you don't know the joke? No, not really - but if there are other users on the board who were privy to the original quotes, I imagine those lines might be entertaining reminders to them.

The first part of my sig is an inside joke but not limited to my friends; if you know my real name, you can appreciate why that part of my sig is droll.

As for the second quote, that's kind of an up-front encapsulation of my beliefs about D&D as well as a tribute to Gary.

My user title is an inside joke from high school that doesn't have to do with hotels, although I have stayed at a howard johnson before.

My grammar isn't great, and for some reason I have always spelled their thier, it's like selective dyslexia or something.

Here is the particular signature that inspired me to stat this thread, just to show you what I mean.

"life is blond"
"stirges suck"
"so do vampires"
"in other games you get to fight... broccoli?"

What do you get out of putting 4 random, silly, out of context quotes at the end of everyone of your posts?

To me at least, this is like wearing a "Git-r-done" t-shirt, or having multiple singing fish mounted in your living room... am I the only one out there who feels this way? Surely not. Come on, seriously..... come on.... you're honestly telling me that in any other converstation you would be defending bumper stickers and those who stick them. or anyone with a git-r-done t-shirt?

What's your issue with bumper stickers exactly?

I don't happen to like bumper stickers for elections that are already over (if your guy won, you should take it down in 3 months - and if your guy lost, you should take it down in 3 weeks). But aside from that, I don't have any issue at all with bumper stickers, and have not heard your particular kind of rant about them before.

Uh, yeah. Yes, I would. Must be inverse snobbery or something.

Kinda makes my blood boil when a snooty fellow academic refers to my wife's homeland as "the garbage belt of the USA", or I hear other derogatory comments in regards to the habits of rednecks, Appalachian-Americans, et al.

I happen to think very highly of singing wall-mounted fish. :)

My sig is to remind people to shut their stupid damn mouths if they don't know what they're talking about. It rarely works, but I'm fighting the good fight.

In the real world it's a universal truth that, while amusing, bumper stickers are the cultural equivalent of walking around with food stains on your shirt. So why is it, that in this community of people who decide to spend some portion of their spare time playing intellectual games, so many people have these virtual bumper stickers? (promotional signatures promoting a product or website don't fit into this category)
That's both bizarrely and unjustifiably denigrating of people who put bumper stickers on their cars, while equally bizarrely and unjustifiably pretentious and optimistic about the qualities of roleplaying games and those who play them.

I have signatures turned off. My own sig has a few links to some threads and gaming related stuff that I want to be able to find when I'm in the mood to.
