What do you miss from the good ol' days?

I miss almost never needing to look up rules in the book because I pretty much knew them by heart.

* I almost forgot I really miss being able to whip up npcs in mere minutes. The process is very time consuming in the current edition.

I have got to agree with you on this one. With 1ed, I could run the game without even cracking the DMG, or any of the other books. With 3.x, I am having a hard time getting behind the entire program.
It is also really hard to run an adventure on the fly when the npc's have to have skill points and feats, and yada, yada, woof, woof.

Halflings with hairy feet. ;) I guess it's just a pet peeve of mine that the 3e halfling seems to have diverged greatly from the traditional halfling of old. That can, of course, be fixed with some fluff text.

I miss specialty priests too. I guess some of that can be mimicked with prestige classes.

Weapon speed...not so much. I personally thought it made combat longer.

What I miss most of all are the settings. Some have had the 3e treatment, some good and some bad. Dragonlance has rocked in 3e. Ravenloft...well, personally I liked the 2e version better. I miss Dark Sun and Spelljammer, though there has been some minor support in Dragon/Dungeon and the fans are doing a fantastic job on the websites.

I miss the the days when players didn't back talk--The DM was always right. Sheesh! Players these days!

You know, I don't think the talking back had anything to do with editions. I've had plenty of players talk back to me no matter the game I ran. ;)

So, EN World is in the midst of another edition war, so I figured I'd add a bit of ammo.

I'm a card-carrying 3e nut. I love the game. I really do. It's 98% better than all other versions of D&D.

But there are some things I miss from older editions:

1) The human-centric attitude in original D&D (it just made more sense to be one!), although I love OD&D Halflings and dwarves. (in a 3e homage to OD&D once, I made a rule that all halflings, dwarves, and elves had to take half their levels in their paragon class, to reflect the OD&D feel of things).

Honestly, I think the game is more human-centric than ever. They're just that good!

Cheers!

Everything that's been listed above.

Plus the cover and interior artwork - I'm so darn tired of the fake tome look, and the floating people in the rules.

And having the time to game every week.

OK, this is going to sound wierd but you asked for it. Time to wax nastalgic on 1E AD&D.

Tables: Man I miss those tables. The reason why the DM screen was invented was because we had no room for all those tables. And you can do cool things with tables you can't do with math, like repeat the 20 5 times on the to hit tables.

Facing: Facing rules gave meaning to the use of minis. Why buy a mini as opposed to using a poker chip? So you can tell which end is forward, which side was protected bythe shield and so forth. Sure it meant your character was stuck in one direction for 60 seconds at a time (a round in 1E was one minute not 6 seconds) but hey it was so worth it.

Components: So why are we risking our lives to attack this monster? Oh that's right you need to make a something of magical what do you call it. How else can we make a potion of petrification without risking becomming petrified in the process?

Shandra the Castrator: Oh wait that was the Arduim Grimore not AD&D. Not that we cared. I miss her. Ironically she did come out years before that Mrs Bobbit incident. Yes I miss her alright ... as long as she keeps "missing" me.

I miss not having to take into consideration a half-dozen disparate and conflicting work and family schedules just to make a game happen.

I miss being able to play for more than three or four hours at a stretch.

I miss my original TSR d4, the only one of my set that got lost. Or possibly it's just lodged in someone's foot somewhere.

I miss having the stamina to spend hour after hour keying a ridiculously overcomplicated dungeon in excruciating detail in longhand.
