I find it depends largely on what's being played.

For example, if it's Greyhawk, Dark Sun, Dragonlance or one of my own homebrews... I'll want to DM. Planescape... I rather mix it up. Then there are some games, like Iron Heroes, which seem to beg to be played, rather than DM'd.

A'koss.

I prefer being DM.

I have realized that I only like being a player if the DM is really good at running a game that fits my style. I prefer the PC to be more personal to me, if he's not, I don't get into playing him much. If I don't care about my PC much, the game is more like a board game that is fun every once in awhile but not on a regular basis. It's hard finding new DMs that fit my style as a player because they are either too rules lawyery, too powergamish (even if it's in my favor), too silly, or they just run a dull game. Some DM's are fun to play with, just not on a regular basis.

I prefer a mixture of DMing and playing. Currently I DM, but our group has been doing some additional one shots that I have been playing in.

DM

I only have enough time to run one game per week. I would much rather spend the time as a DM. I have always been a DM because I'm usually the only one in the group willing/able to run a game.

I'd prefer a mixture of both, with emphasis on DMing. D&D is a major creative release for me, and just being a player doesn't provide enough of that.
