What do you prefer? Long home campaigns or Adventure Paths with an end?

What do you prefer? Same character for years and years or an adventure path shorter?

What do you prefer? One long home campaign for YEARS AND YEARS or an adventure path series where the PC's will play through a set campaign arc from leves 1-15 that can occur over a year (or two) or less.

Even a year is pushing it. I like to organize games into seasons - when I pitch it I'll give a rough estimate for how long I think it will take - say 6-8 for a short one, 10-12 for a longer one. After that we can decide what to do, another season with the same characters or a whole new game.

I prefer a campaign where the players create the story, rather than the more scripted approach of an adventure path. (Before anyone leaps on that, let me say that I'm not asserting that this is a black and white, clear-cut dichotomy.)

I think I understand what you mean. I too consider AP's to be "scripted," but I kind of like that as a DM, becasue they're easier to plan/play.

Obviously you're not going to kill the BBEG in an adventure path in session 2, whereas in a player-driven story certain things could happen "early" or "later" than the DM's original plans.

Solution: Don't make plans.

I like home campaigns that run for six months to a year. Two is REALLY pushing it, and three or more is right out. However, I'm not much for published adventures, especially long 'path' type adventures (I'm not sure if that's what you meant, because I don't recall hearing the term 'adventure path' used for campaigns of a set duration prior to the Dungeon adventure paths).
