What do you prefer? Long home campaigns or Adventure Paths with an end?

What do you prefer? Same character for years and years or an adventure path shorter?

8-12 months seems like a good campaign length. Anymore than that I get bored. I want to try new things or switch from playing to DM'ing or vice versa.

I prefer adventure paths more akin to the adventure given in the old Wrath of the Immortals boxed set, albeit without the enormous metaplot of WotI. I like the idea of an overarching plot, but I prefer it to be something that doesn't dominate the campaign. Something happens relating to the adventure path, followed by a few weeks or months of adventuring, then something that ties back into the adventure path occurs, and so on. That way it allows the setting to have more than one thing happening at a time, and it allows for change of pace sessions to boot.

I'd love to play for years and years but I also like there to be a final climatic ending. So I'm sort of torn. As it is I never get to have the first one and rarely the second so it doesn't much matter. As a DM I always provide the second but I'm trying to do the first.

I like long campaigns that have lots of PC input into the direction that they go.

I'm going to run Savage Tide (in addition to my ongoing campaign) because it looks like a lot of fun. However, I'm sure I'll still prefer the free-roaming gaming of "Where are you headed next session?" that I've been playing for years.

Short snappy games. Lasting 2-3 months tops that tell a fun story and end. Then move on to a different game. Because of this, I don't like many D20 games that start you at first level either. Savage Worlds or Spirit of the Century that starts you out already pretty competent fit this ideal a lot more.
