I dislike them. They are responsible for my pooh-poohing Planescape when it came out, and now I regret not overlooking that one bit of stupidity and enjoying the rest of it.
 

I like the original concept of them as beings like living geometric forms, not so much the bio-mechanical stuff they came up with for Planescape (though the flavor of them in Planescape was otherwise good).

The idea Baron Opal expressed in another thread about making them living crystalline forms with "limbs" made of static discharges, like the probe in Star Trek I, was so cool I'm immediately yoinking it and considering ways to directly use them in my games now (they've showed up before in indirect ways in my campaign setting).

I've totally dug these guys since I first saw them in the 1st edition MM II.

In my current Planescape campaign there is a major Exiled Modron NPC (barkeep) that the players love.
