A used bookstore near me has about 3 copies of the 1e players handbook for $8 each, 2 copies of the DM's Guide, and 2 monster manuals.

That's not even looking online. I picked up a lot of BECMI stuff between NobleKnight.com, and PDFs. It really isn't hard to find "support" for whatever edition you are looking for.

I have about 4 crates worth of 3rd edition books and adventures (Goodman, Paizo, Wizards, Green Ronin). If I were in a 3rd edition game right now, I wouldn't run out of material for a long time.

So. I totally agree with the original post.

I guess that I am not accustomed to putting up with such rudeness from those I game with. I run whatever I feel like. When a buddy wants to run something, I play it. I am in a 4E game right now. I'm not wild about the system and I won't run it, but I can enjoy playing with my friends no matter what rules we use. I wonder if that is rare in the gaming community? Do we game with friends and enjoy our evening no matter what we play or do we find a bunch of people that play our version of whatever and play with them only as long as they use the system we support? I am in the former group. I like my friends more than any edition.

I'll play a system I enjoy. My time is too valuable to play a system that I don't like regardless of who is running it, because at some point the system is going effect my level of enjoyment. I'd rather sit out and hang out doing something else on another day or night.

Then again, my friends and I don't define our friendship on gaming- it just happens to be something we have in common. Which is why while they are off LARPing once a week, my refusing to join them is not an issue.

And, for material that is only available in pdf? Try finding it legally if the publisher discontinues it either a) instead of making the changes to the OGL; or b) they decided to switch the product to 4e and is required to discontinue the OGL/d20 version).

Yeah its much the same with us. Some of the group LARPs ( I used to but don't have time anymore) and others don't, some of us play WOW and other MMO's and others don't. For us, gaming is a semi-regular activity that we all get together for to hang out, socialize, and have a good time. The rules we use are more of an afterthought. :)

DragonSnack, this seems like the essence of your post; for what it's worth, I didn't take Delver's OP that way. It seemed more like an encouragement for those of us who are not into "teh new shiny," a call to arms, if you will, that we don't have to be discouraged or disillusioned with our favorite edition (whatever it may be) being out of print.

Just my $0.02.

Exactly what I got, too.

Indeed, if anything, it is a call to those of us who are not into "teh new shiny" to engage with others who are not into "teh new shiny" rather than endless debating "teh new shiny" with those who are into it.

Because those into "teh new shiny" will, sooner or later, see the Good Ship Hasbro sail away from them, too.
