What do you want to see in a new magazine?

You might not like the fact that everyone who is working on the magazine to bring you solid content and worth reading articles is working free of charge.

I should clarify. If you're free-press and not offering compensation, that's different. Some small-press zines offer compensation (not necessarily monetary funds) in exchange for articles and getting them deliver after the fact, I've found, is often an exercise in pure frustration. If I know I'm doing something for free, I have no problems with contributing. If I've been promised compensation, not getting it leaves a bad taste in my mouth. So I think that you're good here ;)

I feared having to tell people that the magazine will mainly, at least at first, be a labor of love and as such the writers would not get paid. I feared most, if not all, would laugh in my face. Actually, it is the quite the opposite. I got a lot of great feed back from writers who want to be apart of the project. It is refreshing to know that not everything has to revolve around money and the industry.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Okay, I think all the problems with the newsletter subscription have been worked out. We manually placed everyone on the list.

I also sent out the first newsletter. You might not have gotten a confirmation e-mail, but you should have the newsletter. Let me know if this did not come.

Cool, glad I finally got that working.

Sorry however that the formating got a bit wonky on the first newsletter. Just one more issue to work through. As a powerful and wise wizard once said:

I would like to see a gaming publication that most resembles the early issues of Dragon.
1. Print rather than PDF.
2. Black printing on clean white paper, not strange colors on other strange colors.
3. Decent sized font for easy reading.
4. Crisp B&W line artwork interior, color cover optional.

As far as content goes, I would like to see articles about how to plan a dungeon, map a city, design a world. I get tired of someone doing these things for me and then publishing it because to me much of this is filler, and think that general articles helping people design their own materials are more useful overall.

If the magazine wants to pre-make materials, you might consider the idea of picking one campaign world and sticking with it. This can even be an original campaign setting unique to the publication. Think about Judges Guild from the 1970's and their "Wilderlands" campaign where each module or adventure had a specific place to occur in their world. They gave us a city-state, a haunted house, several villages, and more. All tied together into a single campaign, and most of it came as parts of their magazine subscription.

Giving player tips seems better than extra classes. Having DM tricks that can be used in a home-brew campaign would be useful. I guess I would like to see an emphasis on how to play rather than enless monster ecology type articles and the like that (to me) don't enhance the gaming experience at all.

Just my two cents.

Do you know Kobold Quarterly magazine by Wolfgang Baur. That might be something for you...

Normally I guess I would be offended that you would mention the competition in my thread, but I guess since I have a link to their site on my web-stie, it is hard to berate you. :D :p

Kobold Quarterly is good, better than I would have thought. I guess Wolfgang's years of working for WOTC is paying off. :) ;)
