What does the paladin do when...

People. Always gotta do things the hard way... *sighs*

Simple answer - grab the pendulum, rip it out of the air, throw it at the mage.

Problem solved.

Hey, this Paladin's supposed to be an epic hero, right?

This is way easier than most of the stunts Conan's pulled off. If this paladin can't even keep up with Conan in a Hero contest, then get that inappropriate Epic descriptor outta there!

Cool situation to be in (assuming this is a campaign clincher rather than a normal day for your paladin)...

This is a great opportunity to really branch off in different ways with your character imo.

if you want to try an guilt ridden paladin fighting off a demon horde he helped to conjure, allow his personal decision to save his wife to come first- love is a classic cause for the fall of duty.

if you want to fight the sorceror the other day, and raise a child to avenge his mother if your paladin does not.. save the child.

if you care to try the angle of "paladin who sacrificed everything to save the world"... kill the mage at the cost of your family and maybe even your connection to your god.

It is the natural instinct of a player to try to tackle a situation in the "best" manner.. in a way that beats a moral dilemma by minimizing loss and maximizing gain and allows him or her to walk away thinking "Yay, I won that encounter."

While this translates great into the game aspect, where you're in some respects trying to shove it in the DM's face that you beat the puzzle he set before you (just as many posters here are griping about a bastard DM who shoved this puzzle in your face), it seriously seems to cheapen a great moment for your character. As far as I'm concerned, he's given you a spotlight- and the best spotlight is the one where the actor or character faces a conundrum.

I'd take this second to see where you want to go, rather than simply thinking of how to best defeat this puzzle.
