What feats should PCs automatically get?

I'm thinking of things like Power Attack, and Combat Expertise. Or Spring Attack, things that people should just be able to do, and doesn't require any sort of special training or natural ability.

Okay, call me a stick in the mud ... but why should a player get something for free? Personally, I like working and earning my feats.

I know, I know. i am just a purist. But in my mind the game designers made the game the way it is so that people could be different through feat progression, skill progression, etc. But if every fighter-type gets Power Attack for free (for example) then now they just have one more thing the same as every other fighter-type. Or, if every Rogue gets Nimble fingers, then they all have that in common. [And no, not all fighters take Power Attack and not all rogues take Nimble Fingers. In truth, I have yet to play a fighter who took Power Attack - believe it or not. But yes, most of my rogue's do end up taking Nimble Fingers...]

Oh, by the way, I have a sick and demented reason to not giving stuff away for free as well. If you give away the "ho-hum" feats away at low level ... they get the mediocre feats earlier. If they get the mediocre feats earlier, then they also get the cool feats earlier. If they get the cool feats earlier, then they also get the feats that "absolutely rock cause they are high level feats" earlier. And if they get those feats earlier ... now what are they going to take at high levels? Insert new feats, addition resources that give alternate feat chains, etc. Basically, making people advance faster along the feat chains is really just a deep rooted ploy by publishing companies to get people to buy more alternate books! It's really just a lesson in creative ways to increase demand in economic terms!

^ No, I'm not really serious. Just trying to be humerous and lighten people's day!

Yeah up with Capitalism
Down with, um - Free will?

(oh on topic:
Yes I think there are too many combat manouveres that are being pushes as feats which should just be allowed in normal combat - sunder springs to mind

anyway too buysy atm so will think of more to add later:)

I wasn't talking about fighters getting power attack. I meant EVERYONE gets PA, because it's not a feat, it's more like a combat manouver, and anyone can just go for the gusto, without trying for accuracy as much.

You don't need a feat to sunder.

Exactly. So people shoudl be allowed to PA, but not as effectively as if you had the feat.

For example: reckless attack: -4 to Attack, +2 to Damage (+3 with twohanded weapons)

the PA feat would improve on this standard ability.

The way CE improves on fighting defensively. The way Imp SUnder improves...Sunder ;)

I like that structure for combat options. Everybody can do the moves. It only is those with the feat who are really good at it.

I get what you are trying to say. Instead of giving them the feats, I'd create a non feat version that is inferior to the feat. That way the feat is still useful and there for people who want to do it better.

I think that was his point, what feats need to have a lesser non feat option available.
No, I was thinking give all players PA and CE and SA for free. Maybe all MetaMagic feats as well. But those ideas work well also.
