Okay, call me a stick in the mud ... but why should a player get something for free? Personally, I like working and earning my feats.
I know, I know. i am just a purist. But in my mind the game designers made the game the way it is so that people could be different through feat progression, skill progression, etc. But if every fighter-type gets Power Attack for free (for example) then now they just have one more thing the same as every other fighter-type. Or, if every Rogue gets Nimble fingers, then they all have that in common. [And no, not all fighters take Power Attack and not all rogues take Nimble Fingers. In truth, I have yet to play a fighter who took Power Attack - believe it or not. But yes, most of my rogue's do end up taking Nimble Fingers...]
Oh, by the way, I have a sick and demented reason to not giving stuff away for free as well. If you give away the "ho-hum" feats away at low level ... they get the mediocre feats earlier. If they get the mediocre feats earlier, then they also get the cool feats earlier. If they get the cool feats earlier, then they also get the feats that "absolutely rock cause they are high level feats" earlier. And if they get those feats earlier ... now what are they going to take at high levels? Insert new feats, addition resources that give alternate feat chains, etc. Basically, making people advance faster along the feat chains is really just a deep rooted ploy by publishing companies to get people to buy more alternate books! It's really just a lesson in creative ways to increase demand in economic terms!
^ No, I'm not really serious. Just trying to be humerous and lighten people's day!
