What games should I have on my shelf?

I'll second Angel. The Cinematic Unisystem is just an all around fun game. They even make combat modifiers fun to read about. The highly cinematic approach is very interesting and has greatly influenced my gaming. It makes no appeals to reality OR balance, as it is not trying to emulate anything other than a TV show. It also handles characters of different power levels better than any system I've seen - in Con games I've ran its more common for people to want to play Xander or Cordelia than Buffy or Angel! The wise cracking sidekicks are really fun to play. :)

Another is Exalted 2e. I don't know if you got the first one, but the second is (IMO) a great improvement. This isn't a game if you want something simpler than D&D - Exalted is every bit as complicated, just in different ways. A lot of people think 'anime and Final Fantasy' when they think of Exalted, but there's just as much Beowulf and Achilles in Creation. The characters are heroes of a lost age, reborn into a world on the brink of destruction and only they can save it. Its interesting mechanically because where D&D has its roots in wargaming, Exalted has its from CCG play. There's lots of playing this move to counter that move, taking advantage of openings, and wild combinations. And on top of all that, the artwork is beautiful. The typical WW fiction at the start of each chapter is replaced by a full color comic, depicting the world in vivid color.

Finally, I'll recommend All Flesh Must Be Eaten. Another Unisystem game, this one is the classic, so its more detailed and not as fast as the version in Angel. This is basically the Dawn of the Dead RPG. It has a great zombie creation guide and comes with (IIRC) six 'Deadworlds' - minisettings involving the rise of the living dead. It isn't exactly revolutionary, but remains remarkable in that its the perfect pickup game RPG. You can hand everyone an archetype, pick a deadworld, and literally be gaming within 5 minutes. The game tends to be so immediate that its easy to run - there's zombies everywhere, and they want to eat your face!

Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 2nd Edition. My go to fantasy system. Absolutely brutal in combat. So avoid combat..

Unless you're the GM! :D

Anyhow, my list of games that I would re-invest in if my current collection burned up:

Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, 2nd edition
Star Wars d6, first edition
Call of Cthulhu, 6th edition
Stormbringer, 2nd edition
Runequest, 2nd edition
Cyberpunk 2020
James Bond 007
Paranoia, 2nd edition
Mutant Chronicles, 1st edition
Kult, 2nd edition

And a lot of Swedish games no one outside Sweden knows a lot about, and also a lot of D&D, but that's not for this thread. :D

/M

Some of what I'd recomend in addition in additon to 3.x - d20 modern,GURPS, Call of Cthulhu, Classic Traveller, Fudge, True 20, C&C, BFRPG, Pendragon, WHFRP, Gamma World 1st or 4th edition, Runequest 2nd editon and Runequest current edition.

Cyberpunk 2020 (or 2013; either way)
Call of Cthulhu
Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 2e (though you are apparently not looking for more fantasy stuff)
Mutants & Masterminds 2e
World of Darkness (core book)
World of Darkness - Second Sight
Buffy the Vampire Slayer

And a couple of things you specifically said you don't want to even give a second [first?] look. . .

Can't think of anything else, that you don't have, that would really qualify. While Keeping your criteria in mind, anyway.

I'd suggest the following:

World of Darkness - For horror roleplaying (heavy on the roleplaying side). Also fairly easy to find players. Rules are easy to teach.

D&D - Standard fare, easy to find players.

Battletech - For off nights where the DM has writer's block.

Twilight:2000 - Because IMHO d20 Modern doesn't reflect modern combat very well (why is it harder to shoot someone at close range with an Uzi on full auto than it is with a single shot?). A nice dose of non-fantasy roleplaying in a present day, non-sci fi world.

Cyberpunk 2020 - For the same reason as Twilight:2000 but in a sci-fi world.

Star Wars (d20 or WEG) - Because EVERYONE knows the setting.

How well would the system work to replicate something like Supernatural? I've finally gotten my friends hooked on the show, and I'd love to run a game like that.

That was why I've avoided it. I can't stand anime. Now, various Western myths (Greek, Norse, Babylonian) would be great.

That also makes me wonder about Scion. Has anyone played this? How's it work?

Check out World of Darkness 2e with the supplement books "Ghost Stories" and "Mysterious Places". I love Supernatural too and these books are the PERFECT combination for a game based on the series.

Contrary to popular belief you can run a whole campaign/chronicle with Mortal characters. They do NOT have to become Vampires, Mages, or Werewolves. :)

World of Darkness - Second Sight

What's that?

Feel free to mention them. I'm fine with others getting benefit from the thread. I mainly mentioned my tastes to encourage others to say why a game was good, rather than just give a list of games they own -- which really doesn't help me narrow down the five or six books I'm likely to be buying.

Second Sight adds psychic powers to nWOD. However, White Wolf is out of stock as is Amazon. I waited for an order from Amazon for two months before I finally canceled the order. I'd like to own it because I too want to run a game based on Supernatural. Even though the Yellow Eyed Demon is dead I'm sure the other "Kids" could be out there causing trouble. Imbibing demonic blood kinda does that to a person, ya know? :D
