What Geek Media Do You Refuse To Partake In?

I'm too old and too poor to get into Magic: The Gathering. Hearthstone is plenty for me.

And no matter how much the fans insist on using Japanese terms from it in general geek shared spaces, I'm not likely to get into anime at this point, as a lot of the dramatic conventions in the most popular stuff (over-emoting, lots of screaming) doesn't appeal to me the way it does my kids. (I did enjoy stuff from the 1960s and 1970s, when over-emoting and screaming was something I was doing with my friends anyway.) I am looking forward to the second season of Delicious in Dungeon, though.

FWIW I think this is largely a stereotype forged online, one that usually does not prove true IRL.
If the people giving it a bad rep online weren't participating in the community, that would be true. But fact is, they are. And though they may be avoidable through my effort, I'm not really nostalgic enough for the OSR values of play to go to that effort.

I’ve kinda cut my own groove in the Geekiverse.

I started collecting comics in the early 70s, and quit in the mid-1990s. I’m starting the process of donating my collection to various charities. The price vs enjoyment equation stopped resulting in positive numbers.

I ignore all of Star Wars except the first 3 movies. I haven’t watched any Star Trek that wasn’t on broadcast TV or standard cable. (I don’t watch any entertainment behind an additional paywall.)

I enjoy some anime, but won’t touch manga.

I love the RPG hobby, but have no real interest in LARPing beyond 1-2 summers of doing some NERO sparring…and that not in costume.

Used to be big in M:tG, but I eventually got tired of bad rulings & mechanics nerfs, releasing broken cards in different colors, cards that got barred from tournaments after just a couple of months, etc. Dropped out of buying shortly after 6th, and tournaments a year later. Early on, I dabbled in other CCGs, but only Magic held my interest. (Still have ALL the cards, though.)

I haven’t purchased a game for my iMac in at least a decade. It’s been all mobile games since then.

And while the last film I saw in theaters WAS a MCU movie, it was the first Avengers one. I also saw the first Iron Man. Haven’t seen anything else from Marvel, nor any of the DC movies. The only DC stuff I’ve seen was most of The Flash series on CW, plus a smattering of episodes of their other shows.

Considering the question, I'm beginning to suspect that I'm not much of a geek after all. I haven't taken a stance on anything and said, "Never!" I've tried a bunch of geek media and most just didn't do it for me. I'm a big fan of TTRPGs, cRPGs (especially), computer games in general, Sci-fi (especially), fantasy, horror, and conspiracy (like X-Files) literature, film and series.

Things I've tried (multiple times) but just couldn't get into:
  • Anime. It's the whole animation style. I do appreciate some of the art style.
  • Animation in general. There are exceptions, like Arcane; it hit the mark somehow.,
  • Warhammer/War Games. I love the minis and the lore, just not the gameplay.
  • Watching streamed RPGs or computer gaming. I'll do it myself.
  • Youtubers have never been interesting to me regardless of the topic. One exception was a terrain crafting series called DM's Craft.
  • Catan/Dominion - those sort of games. They annoy me for some reason. Yet I love games like Civilization.
Yet to try: CCG, Manga, ... what else am I missing out on?

Yes, you are quite special

I'm a long-time horror fan, but I prefer it mostly as words on the page. That said, there's a difference between gore as a consequence and gore as the point--I'm not a fan of slashers or torture porn (they don't work as horror for me) but something like Sinners, where the gore is present because vampires are, is well within my range.

(Obviously, if your range is different, that's fine; I'm just seeing what seems like potential overlap.)

I haven't seen Sinners yet. My wife has, and she liked the film, and she has less gore tolerance than I do, so I'd probably be fine with it.

I know at least one person who can't tolerate gore at all who greatly enjoyed the movie despite that so I'd say you should be fine.

You can look away from most of the really gory scenes without missing anything important and usually get plenty of warning when they're about to happen.
