I've had a lot of fun adapting published adventures to my campaign. I just don't have the time to write all my adventures so they are a godsend.
I try to be as rules-prepared as possible. Nothing breaks up the action like cracking a book. I like to print stuff out from SRD websites like major monster stats, NPC spells, special qualities/attacks, rules for major events like cave-ins, drowning or starving.
A very important thing to do is to tailor the adventure to your players and their characters. Make sure there are scenes where each gets to show off his cool abilities. Check their backgrounds and tailor the treasure or opponents to match.
It's much easier to change the plot of the adventure and just use the maps and encounters--that's the stuff that takes a long time to compile.
