see p. 12 of Tome and Blood: Death of a Master.
basically the familiar is treated as if the wizard/sorcerer was one level lower but without a master... so you might have an intelligent cat running around talking with other felines and spell resistance.
if the master is brought back from the dead, the cat becomes his familiar again at the appropriate level.
make sense?
