In Unearthed Arcana, they have two ways of dealing with ECL problems. One with ECL level reduction and two with bloodlines. How I read ECL reduction, you essentially spend 2 levels worth of EXP for every ECL level you have. Now this might be a bad deal, but eventually you'll pay it off and then progress normally.
