What I Learnt From Last Night's Session

Nothing saying you can't enchant barding/saddles/bridles/etc for your horse. After all, a "bit of natural armor" or "horseblanket of protection" would make sense in a culture which uses magic and horses...

And just to mess with the players "Pink Mane Ribbons of Protection from Arrows"... see how bad they want the horse to live... ;)

I played a mounted wood elf barbarian with a light warhorse mount in a campaign. Half of his treasure went to getting the mount stuff like mithril chian barding, horseshoes of speed, Bridle of resistance, etc. Yeah he still only had 4 hd (I was 9th when the game ended) but the BBEG was MUCH more worried about the fact that I could outflank his entire army and gank him before he could get a spell off than targetting the horse itself. I loved that horse....

Glad to know that I'm not totally alone here.

Glad to know I'm not the only DM that kills horses. My players regularly complain about horses dying. In fact, they have told new players not to name, or even buy, a horse because "Brent will just kill it."

Then, his mount got dusted on the 1st initiative count of the first round of the first combat, and since it was underwater, he was left floating slowly downward into the deep.

Man, that's harsh. You killed his mount and his brother at the same time!

There really needs to be a system to upgrade mounts for characters other than paladins, rangers and druids.

IMHO, the special mount is the strongest class feature of the Paladin. Giving other classes ways to have beefed up mounts would diminish the Paladin greatly.

In my game, the baddies went after the horses because the person they were after was in a horse-drawn carriage. Immobilizing the carriage by killing the horses, while also possibly blowing up the carriage seemed like the smartest move to make.

Of course, once the PC's saw a couple of their horses go down, and that the baddie was trying to escape on a horse, they took a quick revenge. Once the horse-lust had been tasted it was on from there.
