What if? (3.5 change)

I hear people fussing about characters with one level of ranger or one level of monk all the time, but one levl of cleric is much more of a power gaming tactic imo. A cleric 1/fighter/x gets a few spells and 2 domains. If he has a decent charisma, he can take divine might and wreak havoc. My current character has a level of cleric for the domains luck and travel. Rerolling once a day and free action has saved my ass more than once. Roll a one on that save vs finger of death? Reroll it. Fall in a rushing river? Walk out. Those are CORE domains, too. Better than most feats, if you ask me.

I think two domains is enough. I see plenty of min-maxed characters with levels of contemplative and divine disciple just for the extra domains. No reason to take these classes if clerics get more domains.

Well there would still be a reason. If the cleric lets say didn't even start with a domain, but had to spend a feat to, there would be much less abuse.

Clr1-Turn or Rebuke Undead, 0 domains
Clr5- Bonus Feat (most would have gotten a domain earlier, for more spells, this is another opportunity to get a domain).
Clr10- Bonus Feat
Clr15- Bonus Feat
Clr20- Bonus Feat

Stipulate that only your first domain can be taken without using a cleric bonus feat slot, or that you can only have domains = to your level/5 (Only 1 domain till 5th, 2 till 10th, 3 till 15th, and finally, if you want, up to 4 at 20th).

The caveats are not that many gods have that many great domains, so only people who are really dedicated will bother with taking a lot of domains. It weakens the cleric at levels 1-5, but potentially strengthens the cleric at higher levels. Which is why I said this is to be used in tandem with a d6 HD or a reduction of their armor proficiency.

The problem with scaling Domains by level is this:

A cleric need not worship a deity. It is possible for a cleric to worship the ideals represented by their domains. By doing so, it is very easy to choose the best domains.
