Sorry, this is totally off the cuff and hasn't been thought through...
What if, for each class, the benefits for gaining a level were the same as every other level?
In other words, a fighter would always get, say, +1 BAB, +1 Fort save, +1/4 Ref save, +1/4 Will save, +2 skills, and +1 fighter feat.
A rogue would always get +1/2 BAB, +1/4 Fort save, +1 Ref save, +1/4 Will save, +8 skills, and +1 rogue ability,
A wizard would get + 1/3 BAB, +1/4 Fort save, +1/4 Ref save, +1 Will save, + 2 skills, +1 highest level spell, and + 1 second-highest level spell.
Or, whatever.
Your actual BAB would be the integer value of your BAB score (which could be 1.833, for instance). Your saves would be the rounded value of your saves score (so a 1.5 would be a +2, but a 1.25 would be a +1).
Just messing around with ideas.
I was thinking of the dead levels (i.e. Ftr5) and trying to find a way to re-imagine ways to implement this for multiclass characters.
Or, I suppose, I could wait for 4e.
