D&D 5E What If?

I want to talk and think about the D&D5E Rules with you guys. What wild ideas and interesting ways can we bend, break and destroy the game rules that might be fun and how would that effect the game?

Ideas I am kicking around.

Let PC's stats go up to 30. Instead of hard capping them at 20th what if we let them keep on going?

What if we removed the level restriction on spells? We could use the optional spell point system and just let spells ride without level limits but with caster level still a factor. A 1st level fireball would be -2 Damage dice I guess? What would that do to the game? Maybe remove the auto getting spells thing and they only get what they can find in game.

What if you removed concentration from the game or maybe just added more concentrations at higher level? Like at 6th level you can have two going at once and at 12th three?

What if you added feats to monsters? Something like pc's and added a feat every 4 hit dice or something.

What if you used Gastalt rules instead of the multiclassing rules.

Remove concentration rules should be the primary one.
Recover all HD after every short rest is another.
Make magic items much more frequent and remove the limits on quantity of those.

PC stats capping at 30 would make little difference unless you also change how stats get generated...

imagine you start with a 16 str on a ranger, or paladin and at level 4 it becomes an 18, at 8th it becomes 20, at 12th it becomes 22 and at 16 it can go to 24... so a +1 or +2 modifier at most... if a +1 or +2 weapon doesn't break the game neither would that...

in fact even starting with a 20 (18+race mod) the best you could do with a fighter or rouge (both get 1 bonus stat increase) in 5 stats increases so 30 stat is the best you could hope for...

As for concentration, I would go for never more then 2 (I did give a magic ability to hold 2, but it was given to a non powergamer)

Well if you remove concentration totally, how would that effect the game? My guess is it would make casters more powerful as they could now keep multiple spells going at once. I kind of like the idea! I had thought to make them less restrictive but the idea to ditch them all together sounds better now that I think about it.

Recover all HD after every short rest. Hmm this would boost the pc's a LOT and make healing a lot less important. In the right kind of game this could work but I dislike it for mine. Let me think about it.

What reasons did you consider important for changing this this way? Are you trying to remove the need for a healer?

The magic item thing is pretty much already in the game. They just didn't implement those rules very well.

I, for one, can't wait to see a first level PC cast wish...

Well, at 1st level you get a really limited wish. The types of wishes people make all the time but never come true:

I wish they served my food hot.

I wish it didn't take a whole hour to do (X).

Just once I wish the jackass in line ahead of me wouldn't take so long.

I wish this 2 gallon mug of beer had 0 calories.

The possibilities are endless!
