What is an Elemental Weird?

I have a PrC that allows you to summon this critter at 10th level. Thing is, I don't have the MM II. Can anyone enlighten me?

It's basically an elemental that can act as a seer. It's not as powerful as say an elemental lord but it's pretty darn powerful.

In the olden days, a water weird was a serpentine elemental. In the MMII, there are four elemental weirds that act as seers, tied to a pool of pure element. In the ToH 2, the authors tried to combine concepts - they're serpentine elementals tied to an element pool.

Yeah but I felt ToH2 weirds were WAY cooler. But then I'm a Necromancer Games sucker.

I don't know that they had to be called weirds, but the MM2 monsters (and they've also shown up in Frostburn and Sandstorm) fill a previously unfilled niche and are damned cool.

Yes, I liked those MM2 monsters too. Particularly, I've used them to represent the Wyrd Sisters (of Macbeth fame) and the Moirae (the Fates of Greek myth).

I agree.

99% of all monsters are sword-fodder. One that plays an interesting role in the game is worth its weight in gold. The MM2 wierds got use in my game right away.

Not that I didn't use the ToH2 wierds on occasion, too.

MM2 = no OGC.

They're tough in combat, though. CR12 and can cast a schwack of spells.

(A) for those who *don't* know this archaic sense of the word (alluded to but not really described above) and are hence still catching up:

Weird :
1. Fate, destiny.
2. A soothsayer.

A clever bisociation (as Ken Hite would say), really.

(B) I don't mind usurping the name of the 1st edition Water Weird, since really that whole concept can be summed up as "water elemental serpent," which is a role adequately filled these days by the Elemental Creature template. So I see no need for them to come back, thus leaving the name free.
