What is Ptolus anyway?

*sigh* nothing is every easy :heh:

Okay, someone mentioned that it was sold on amazon.com at this link:
Ptolus on Amazon

Is this the full version, including the CD and everything?

If this is so, with the $25 bonus for opening a charge account the price comes down to around $40, which I would jump at. I like supporting local shops, but this book is just too pricy for me otherwise.

Does the Amazon version contain everything that it would otherwise contain?

Anyone know?

It is unlikely that Amazon will ever have it. They post stuff before they get it, or even know if they will get it. I suggest you read Monte's comment on his own boards: http://p222.ezboard.com/fokayyourturnfrm10.showMessage?topicID=846.topic

Its even harder.

Monte said on his site that he was only sending it to book stores, not to Amazon, so he could support FLGSs directly. Amazon nevertheless posted themselves as selling it even without having any copies. Many expect Amazon to take the orders then months later send out e-mails saying they can't fulfill the orders, leaving everybody who ordered through them without a copy at all.

I'm not buying it in print, I'll consider the pdfs. I grabbed the PG, Chaositech, and Banewarrens so far.

Actually, there's no guarantee that Amazon will actually get it. Monte's trying to only sell it to game stores, which means that, although Amazon MAY get it, it also may not. If the price is that big a deal to you then I suggest you wait until all the PDFs are out and cherry pcik the ones that you think you'll use. Some might be more useful to you than others. Eventually all the material will probably be available to you in PDF; it might just take a while to get them.

Anyway Whiz, I was curious, I was hoping to get clarification: Ratmen in Ptolus, are they like were-rats or Slitheren/Ratmen in Creature Collection?

The second. I haven't looked for exact stats, but the book does mention that they are intended to be low-level opponents for PC's.

On a more general note, I just got mine last night, and I have to say that from a physical standpoint alone, this book is utterly unlike any other gaming book. It reminds me of a really well put-together dictionary (with thicker pages). It's pretty spectacular from that POV. The other neat thing is that I don't think anyone in the D20 world has written this big of a book all by themselves (most are collaborations), and this one is by Monte Cook, so its even more of an event.

For me, it's worth it.

You seriously use 700 pages of material? I've gotten the Forgotten Realms CS when it first came out in 3.0 and can honestly say I don't think I've used more than 25% of the info in there (mainly got it for the feats, prcs and race info).

The Forgotten Realms is just a sitting. None of the dungeons, crypts, tombs, etc. in the area are fleshed out. Ptolus has several chapters worth of site-based adventures just sitting there, waiting to be used. Some of them are incredibly high level, which as you probably know, means that the stat blocks, etc take up more pages. In fact, you could use the book to run an entire campaign from 1-20th, and not need a single other supplement. You can't do that with FRCS, Eberron, or Greyhawk. There are only a very few prestige classes (3 PC ones and one villain class), not that many additional monsters, but a lot of unique characters and creatures that have been statted out, ready to use.

There's also a very nice feeling of thinking to myself that no matter where the players go, I've got my material ready. My Banewarrens arc just completed, (See the players' blog), and the players overwhelmingly voted to keep going with the same PCs in Ptolus, so I'm all ready to go!

I would be well ironic if such a pricey book caused an LGS to go under ;)

And dammit when is my copy arriving in Finland?

They're probably more like Warhammer Skaven from which all ratmen are derived, even Fritz Leiber's. ;)

Doh! Already answered.

The "freebies" that you are referring to are actually an 8.5 x 11" envelope attached inside the back cover of the book (yes, it still comes with the book - yes, it's really part of the book). The CD is in there along with ~25 pages of campaign handouts and reference materials, such as: 1) a full-color poster sized map of the city (one side) and the highest-level dungeon maps (back), 2) 6 pages of random encounter tables (~350 separate events), 3) full color handout map for the players, with a notes page on the reverse, 4) Ptolus-specific reference tables to be clipped to the inside of a DM-screen, 5) A description of Ptolus-specific "events" (read: adventure hooks) that a DM can throw any time or place, 6) ready-made color props such as "adventurers wanted" posters that a party might see posted in the city, menus, wine label, tavern rules, calling cards, etc. that a party is likely to encounter during the campaign, 7) blown-up artwork and description detail for the Delver's Square where adventurers are most likely to hang out, and lots more that I can't even recall right now. Basically, it's all stuff that should be found in any typical campaign setting, but that would be bound into the book (ie, pagecount) in a format that's of little use to a DM without a scanner. The CD itself actually includes electronic copies of most of that stuff for easy editing/printing by the DM, along with complete, searchable, electronic versions of the book's index and table of contents for quick reference by laptop using DMs (for convenience, as well as to limit "fluff" in the actual pagecount -- the expanded TOC alone is 13 pages of pdf). Basically, it's a bunch of stuff intended to add immersion to the game without creating an additional load on the DM. I wish there was a good way to communicate how many other facets of the book are designed along those same lines, but pagecount certainly ain't it.

Instead of characterizing the bonus materials as fluff that no one would want, how about just telling people what's in there so they can make up their own minds about whether it has value of not? Monte's listed an overview of the Book/CD contents here: http://www.montecook.com/cgi-bin/page.cgi?mpress_Ptolus_TOC

The book covers are embossed, front and back, and include 3 ribbon bookmarks sewn into the bindings for marking places. Each separate section of the book has color-coded tabs visible on the page ends for quick reference. 4 cardstock bookmarks are included as well. Monte's built this book with a DM in mind. I don't know why you'd even compare it, physically, to a typical gaming book like the core books.
GGGGRRRAAAAAGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

Too much information :)

Hmm, okay, damn you, damn you all to hell :] :] :] :] :] :]

Okay, I feel better. :) ;)

Well, it sounds like a good product, and I am not talking about the fancy embossed cover or the ribbons. It sounds like it would come in handy and it also sounds like each chapter in pdf format would run $6 a chapter and that would be over $200 for all 32 chapters. So, I am getting closer to springing for it, but I might have to have the wife order it for me. If I order it and hate it, I would be very upset that I spent such money on it :)
