What is the (2nd?) best portable battlemat?

Ah, Flip-mats -- I forgot about those. I saw that thread, too. That could be an ideal short-term solution, perhaps even a long-term one.

Does anyone know where to get one in Canada, on- or offline?

Flip-Mat is the #2. Definitely. It's #1 for convention use too since it fits in a backpack and Tact-Tiles do too but they weigh a ton.

As to Canada orders, I was able to order some of the templates from Steel Sqwire and ship them to Denmark. Just send an email to the proprietor (sorry, my email is down or I'd post it here) and ask how to handle shipping. I didn't check their order page either, but check there first in case you can now order overseas through the site. While you're at it, get some of their wire spell templates. Worth every penny.

I've seen pads of ginormous paper with a 1" grid; it's perfect 'cuz you can draw stuff beforehand.

Ive experimented with that too. You get it at office supply stores in the easel and whiteboards department. Primarily meant for doing charts and junk for presentations.

Problem is, as Lukelighting said...they're really huge.

And costly! They used to be $10.00 for two pads. Now it's $27.95 at Staples. Yeesh.

I hear ya. Thats why I don't use them. Going for about 13 bucks per pad here, and I think there's only about 40 sheets, if that.
