What is the cultural signifigance of Masks in China and martial arts?

I see them in some art and some movies what is the cultural significance of these? What were they used for, who used them etc.? Any info would be helpful.

I know they are used in theatre and Taoist religious rituals to represent different spirits. I'm not too sure about martial arts.
