What is the longest you've ever played a single PC?

My longest lived D&D characters - I had a fighter I played for about 6 years in first ed, and a monk I played for 8. In 3rd, I've got a mid 30th level paladin/cleric that I have been playing since 3rd ed came out.

In other systems - I have a number of Champions characters I have played for in te 6 to 10 year range, and one that I have played for 16, and is still going.

My campaigns last on the average 8 years. I only run one group for a campaign - when I have a new set of player characters, I start a new world. I don't like running multiple teams in the same world - it sort of cheapens it for me - I don't want to give anyone a "used world". Each new game deserves a new game world. I've never run a published world, everything I've ever done is homebrew.

I've played my PC Lester "The Angel of Adventure" since around 1997, so 10 years now.

There have been many breaks along the way, but we started in 2ED, and currently play 3.5.

I've taken him from 1st level to 29th. Its been a long and bloody road!

i played galder bloodaxe, a dwarf fighter in a 2nd edition game, for 1.5 years. he went from level 7 to 11 in that time. the game collapsed because of interpersonal issues, but i was sick of the character anyway :)

i am so envious of anyone who has played the same character for many years

Well, I have a half-ogre Fighter that was created in the summer of '85 that occasionally gets hauled out even in these days (he's gone from 1st to 21st now) but its not that common, other players are as afraid of bringing him on adventures as they are of the bad guys.

Well, my home brew world, continuously running game, started its first group in '82 when PCs from the Greyhawk game I was running at the time crossed the planes and discovered it. The game world remains, even if all those players who first set foot in it are long gone. Currently I run 3 different groups in it. (And running 3 groups at the same time is a bit rough - DI better be up to the task of taking the work off of my shoulders that Dungeon has!).

Just about 6 months. With any luck, I'll push it to 7 months without the character dieing. We started at 6th and we will conclude at either 11th or 12th. Once that adventure is done, the DM is passing the screen to someone else and we'll be rolling up some first level characters and start a new campaign with an expected length of around 4 months.

Lanefan (Human, Fighter, 1e) started in early 1984, kept going till sometime 1989, reappeared in about 2002 and just retired again near the end of 2006; he's probably my best in terms of total time played though his second go-round was as a party NPC in my game. He started at 3rd level and was last seen at 10th, and as he has recently wound up on someone else's active game world he might be seen again as a PC at some point...

My longest-running continuous PC is probably Appppil (Part-Elf, Illusionist, 3e) who started in about mid-2001 and is still going today; nobody (including me) is quite sure how. :) She started at raw 1st and is now 11th.

The Magister of Skulls

Doombrother Seth: Inquisitor of Kelemvor

Male Chondathan Tiefling Clr5/Nec5/Lor10 (ECL 21)
LN Medium Outsider (native)
  • Seth has taken part in 3 campaigns.
  • His longest campaign lasted 1 true year.
  • He has served under 2 DMs.
  • His total game life is roughly 2 true years.

2e (94-99)

Janus "drowbane" Nasadra
Drow fighter 13

How would I make him now?

a gestalt... Drow Rogue (or Ninja?) Y / Iaijutsu Master N | Warblade X (where drow + Y + N = X)

I have been known to talk about Drowbane for hours at a time....

Thing is, it took longer to level in the old days. Now, a 20th level whatever needs 20k XP. In 1e a 20th level wizard needed 250k XP.
In my previous 1e campaign, that lasted something like 14-15 years, the only surviving original character got to (I think) 16th Ranger/9th Cleric, or something like that.

Nowadays, you couldn't play for that long without changing campaigns several times.

Longest I played a character was probably about 9 years. One of my first characters was a Wizard called Humphrey. When I last played him he was a Wizard 25/Cleric 5 (1e). I only changed to Cleric so I could fit in with the party that was being assembled.
