D&D General What is the Quintissential D&D Mascot Monster?

Green Slime and Rot Grub come to mind. Maybe not mascots but iconic for sure. As is the Trapper.

I'd be curious as to know what the official first monster encountered in the first D&D adventure was? Anyone know?

Hard to go against a dragon since that is in the game's name. But if it is for something more unique to D&D, it might be the Beholder. As a kid it would have either been the Rust Monster or Umber Hulk though.

I wouldn't be mad if it was the Gelatinous Cube either.

Beholder for me. I think one important aspect to this is how dangerous and memorable an encounter with a monster is. A Beholder has multiple dangerous attacks and is from a wholly different reality that is innately dangerous to the main reality just by existing, making Beholders an existential threat. I also think they look very alien, gross, and intimidating (at least in the better art). Finally, they are very unique to D&D itself. The only thing even remotely similar is the Cacodemons from Doom, and that's only slightly similar. Kobolds, Owlbears, Rust Monsters, and mimics are a little too small potatoes to really make an impression. They're all great, just don't have to extra oomph that some others have. Dragons also fit the bill but are a little too generic to feel quintessentially D&D.

Beholders just look silly

No way how can you possibly call this silly looking? Blasphemy

I'd be down for a Umberhulk - its a much cooler bug than rust monster
