What is this Oathbound I keep hearing about?

I don't own it, but what I can imagine is something maybe a bit like the Planetouched...

You spend (x) XP, you gain the ability to use LIGHT once per day.

You spend (x+y) XP, you gain the ability to grow wings.

You spend (x+y+z) XP, you gain an aura of awe.
Something like that, yes. Almost all the abilities are of a continuous nature (the exceptions I found on a read-through was one ability that lets you spit venom 3+Con bonus per day, one that gives you a breath weapon 1/day per 5 levels and one that lets you spell turn up to one spell level per level) - natural weaponry, ability bonuses, skill bonuses, and so on - rather than spell-like abilities. Also, the abilities are divided into thirteen different foci (four of which are mutually exclusive), and within each focus you have to learn the abilities in order (you must evolve Barked Creature before you evolve Photosynthesizing Creature).

Also, the XP costs are quite high, ranging from 2,500 XP (giving you spines that do an additional 1d6 damage on an unarmed attack and make grappling extra-fun) to 13,500 XP (change creature type to Plant, immune to poison, paralysis and stunning, +3 to saves vs. polymorph and mind-affecting things, and 50% fortification. Alternately, you can create a hypnotic pattern and turn spells back at their caster as per spell turning on a successful Reflex save, no more than one spell level per day per your level).

Oh, this is gonna be GOOD. BLAST IT ALL! Why do all of my bills have to be high in Sept??? My wife would kill me if I got another book so soon... I'll have to skim at the book store. :D

Glad you think so Bill.Thinks Bill has no idea what a Slacerian is...but then realizes neither does Nightfall himself, since there's never been an actual DESCRIPTION of these guys!

This is the end of us all !!!

As a writer for a d20 setting (Archipels -- a French campaign world you probably don't know about ;) I'm really concerned about that Oathbound idea.

Here's why :

Say your regular D&D group goes for a ride into Oathbound. This is fine, just a change of pace as you would do with Ravenloft. They like the place for its originality and decide they want to spend their XPs on prestige race mutations.

But then what happens ? The party looks like a bachelor party at the Mos Esley Cantina - and they can't go back to wherever they came from. ("Yeah, scaly boy, like you're a Purple Knight"). So your campaign stays in OB permanently.

Can't you see what's gonna happen? They are draining our campaign settings from their characters !! And, more importantly, they're stealing our customers !

We need to do something ! I suggest that every d20 designer out there goes to his local hobby store and burns that wicked addictive drug they call Oathbound !

Do it now ! It may already be too late !

You're the writer of Qrchipels? I love it!!

Seriously, there should not be any problem with taking a character who has taken a Prestige Race back to whatever world they came from - the DM would just have to adjust the game slightly (as he would if a half-celestial or somesuch was allowed in) to properly challenge them. Also, there is nothing that says that PrRaces HAVE to be allowed - maybe the characters have to complete the current quest that they are on before they learn the secrets, etc... ;)

Also, I think that Oathbound ROCKS as well, and have to agree with Ken about the Intro Adventure, but then again, he and I wrote it. ;)

Oathbound really is cool. My fiance and I demo'd it at GenCon and it was really fun. I picked up the book before the demo becauuse it was so beautiful. It was just an awesome looking book. It turned out, that the book was a good read as well.. :)
