What is your cut off point for MSRP?

I bought a couple cases a while back, but I haven't bought any since Underdark came out. I just realized that I had boxes of minis just tossed in together that I never used, so I stopped buying.

I guess that make it a Randomization thing for me, since I wouldn't have said boxes of stuff I'll never use if I hadn't gotten them trying to get things I wanted.

I bought into the first three or four (?) sets. With an eye towards actual collectibility I bought singles from one or two reputable aftermarket minis sites to make sure the sets were complete. I never had any intention of using them for anything but D&D RPG play. Having reached a total of 1120 WotC minis I stopped buying them because with the possible exceptions of a few unique monsters here and there I had no further need to continue the quite considerable investment.

I haven't bought any individual minis since then though I've looked a few times. Since I play D&D a LOT less than when I started buying them, and also have had less disposable income, it has not seemed worth the expenditure to buy minis I'm less than likely to put to use in the forseeable future. Only now, after making the last payment on my truck is that likely to change, but cost vs. possible RPG use is THE primary factor in my own buying decisions here. That doesn't mean there is a hard cutoff of MSRP as it's entirely relative to their anticipated RPG application. It does mean that my purchases of WotC minis will be entirely aftermarket as I have all the unneeded and miscellaneous bulk minis I can stomach.

When they were 12.99, I bought many boosters. When they hit 14.99, I've stuck almost exclusively with the secondary market after getting a couple just to see what rares I might get (since I don't normally buy rares).

the Devourer as my rare didn't impress me.

No? I like it. Big critter.

I'll ebay the two rares I really want (Large Black Dragon to complete my black dragon collection, and the virtuous charger because it looks neat)

The dragon will be expensive, but the charger shouldn't be too bad.

and maybe I'll ebay the dire wolf so I have another large wolf besides my winter.

Do so! It's a great sculpt, and since it's only uncommon, it won't cost much (try to get all three minis from the same vendor to save up on shipping cost)

Even if I could go to the LFGS and draw those two rares from the first two boxes I buy, I think I'll still be spending about the same amount, and this way I don't end up with a bunch of chaff.

Well, the figures aren't that bad and won't trouble you too much if you get them "for free", but you're right: If it's only two rares you want, getting boosters isn't the way to go.

The next expansion? I'll have to see what's in it before I determine how much I'm willing to spend.

The next set is called Night Below, so it's Underdark critters like the set of the same name. There will probably be several drow in it (not a bad thing, the last one was a couple of sets ago). The figures we know are Raistlin Majere, Alhoon (Illithilich), Dire Wraith/Dread Wraith, Babau Demon, and a Shadow Dragon.
