I actually had a very similar idea. Though mine involved a Forgotten Realms Human Paladin of Helm. Specifically a Cormyrean Purple Dragon. This guy was in his late 30's and served for most of his adult life in the Purple Dragons. Unfortunately for him, his last name was "Cormaeril". As in one of the 2 noble families which attempted to assassinate King Azoun. He had enlisted under a pseudonym, so he was able to avoid getting disgraced and banished. Still, it was pretty devastating. Not just for the disgrace to his family name, but especially because of how rife with evil his family was.

Then there was the war with the Red Dragon and her goblins and Ghazneths (One of whom was Rowan Cormaeril, his brother), where he and his fellow Purple Dragons suffered defeat after defeat. He was also present at the battlefield in which King Azoun met his fate, something he witnessed but was impotent to do anything about (Which, as a Paladin of Helm, ate him up inside. His duty was to protect both king and country, and in that war he had so far failed dismally at both). He was then captured and taken as a prisoner of war and imprisoned in a prison camp (Where he was, of course, stripped of all his magical possessions, which were sold by his goblin captors).

While in that prison camp, he (along with many other Purple Dragons) was tormented by the ghost of an elf maid who level drained him. He would've died if it weren't for several other Purple Dragons organizing a break-out, giving him a chance to get away.

So now he was free. But his spirit was sapped, his body old and worn, his name disgraced, and his brother cursed as a Ghazneth. My goals were to have him win himself a pardon (Hopefully gaining noble titles and lands in the process. I had my heart set on becoming Baron of the Stonelands, personally), see to it that his traitorous relatives paid the price for their betrayal, and find a way to save his brother (Even if that meant "releasing" him from his pain).

Unfortunately, I played 1 whole game with this character and that was that.

Anyway, that was 1 idea I had which I wish I could've played. Oh well.

I played a character very similar to this in second edition. He was an old magus that had unwittingly released some very bad mojo in his quest to do good. His enemies in the council of wizards tried to have him executed for his offense, but a couple of friends had enough pull to keep him from being straight up executed. He was drained of all of his levels at once as a punishment for his mistake and it caused him severe mental trauma, he was a bit spacey and had a lot of holes in his memory (to the point that he had completely forgotten various people that he knew and whatnot). He had been burying himself in a tankard of ale in some mining town in the middle of nowhere for some time, when late one night a mysterious stranger pressed a beaten up tome into his hand (his starting spellbook). He eventually pulled himself back together enough to cast some basic spells and hooked up with an adventuring party. And thus was born Finius the Chastised. One of my favorite characters of all time, he was a hoot to play. I played him as the very stereotypical old wizard and it was truly a blast. I wish I had the opportunity to play him again.

"I am a great and powerful archmage....er....well I was."

"FIREBALL....er...wait, I don't know that one."

"...er...what was I saying?"

Though he wasn't quite as crazy as he made himself out to be, it was partly (but not wholly) and act to bamboozzle people into getting his way.

I've always wanted to play someone who worked as a sort of "Conscious agent of the deity's Id"; That is, a Chaotic member of a Lawful church who breaks rules, smashing means but preserving ends.

What the deity wants comes first...
