Is that an old Judges's Guild product? I never owned any JG stuff.

Yup, in fact, I think it was their first. Or among the first. I own the revised version. Two of them. There was also Modron, City State of the World Emperor and Tarantis - but I don't own these. Hopefully Necromancer/JG will revise them.

Re: Lankhmar
Anybody know if a d20 version is in the works?
Don't know. WotC definitely won't bother with it, that is for sure. I would like to see it appear - even if the City State is kinda lankhmaresque, too. (It even has a Golden Lamprey, a Silver Eel, it is near a swamp... Definitely Leiber-influenced.)

I'm getting ready to start a campaign in Freeport. Now with all this talk of how good Bluffside is, I'm having second thoughts. I have the Bluffside book, but haven't had a chance to read it yet. I skimmed through it and the layout looks a lot better than Freeport.

I've checked out the reviews section on both books, but I would like to see a comparison of both cities. Since a lot of you chose Bluffside as being your favorite city setting. Can someone tell me why you think Bluffside is better than Freeport. Thanks.

Buc-
I will tell you that Bluffside has over 100 POI's (Places of Interest) with NPC's for each fully described and plot hooks for each POI and NPC so it can be used abd reused as the PC's travel and go through the city, and with more POI's in Gaming Frontiers and with expansion books coming out as well as a yahoo group dedicated to it it has a lot of punch for one city.

Freeport was hardcover, and looks nicer and has a color map with some great intrigue and detail so either city you use will suit you fine, Bluffside being so detailed is great for PC's to lve and explore since it is so huge.

For me, and I have both, Bluffside has a much richer history and becasue of the POIs the city seems more alive. There is so much going on with each NPC presented if feels more like a real city to me.

I like Llangwyr because its on the edge of nowhere, yet its the last stop for those traveling north along the border river by ship. the town is on both sides of the river (which is always fun) and there isnt too much writen about it so I can customize it to my hearts content. its cosmopolitian at 25,000 people and more worldly then even Melaid. I have a lot of ideas for the surrounding countryside and so far my players seem to like it.

That and the fact you're basically in control there huh San? ;)

Stick with Freeport, matey, you won't regret it! The original d20 city is still the best IMO. What you need to remember about Bluffside is it's sort of a "homegrown" EN product so it enjoys a lot of support here, but it's worth remembering that it's Freeport that took home the ENnie last year.

Here's why I prefer Freeport (and let me just add that I don't think Bluffside is bad or anything, I just like FP better). First, it hearkens back to authors like Robert E. Howard and HP Lovecraft, which gives it a very nice flavor (especially when mixed with the pirate theme). Second, the hardback is a more professional product. Despite a typo here and there, the writing is better, as is the layout, art, and maps. The color poster map is simply awesome. Third, while Bluffside has more locations, Freeport devotes more space to each one. A lot of the Bluffside descriptions are bland (again IMO), consisting of little more than physical descriptions of the buildings. Lastly, the rules material is Freeport is excellent. Cool classes (love the cultist NPC class) and very flavorful magic items.

You might want to look at the Green Ronin webpage today too. Chris Pramas gives a New Year's message that mentions that there's going to be new Freeport adventures this year, including a mega adventure. I'm onboard for that!

What I think is great about Bluffside is that all the things are so easily portable. You could "drag-n-drop" all the POIs out of Bluffside into your own city. In fact, you could build your own little villages using the locations listed in Bluffside if you wanted to.

Given that, I know of a lot of people that use both Bluffside and Freeport. The latter tends to be used as a den of evil, and intrigue, and the former being more of a base of operations. Furthermore, you could use Freeport to augment Sordadon (the harbor portion) of Bluffside. Since Sordadon is very similar in style and flavor to Freeport.

And I think Freeport won the Ennie solely because it has a more recognizable name outside of ENWorld.

I use both Freeport & Bluffside. One things that is REALLY cool about The Hunt: Rise of Evil campaign is that both cities are on the map!

I have become a big fan of Mystic Eye Games.
