What is your favorite D&D monster?

I'm bored and in work-avoidance mode and these sorts of threads are always amusing. :) This can also count as research, since I may be starting a new campaign in the next month or two and I'm always looking for critters to use.

So, what is your favorite monster and why?

Hi,

It's too hard to just list one! I'd like to pick the beholder and the mind flayer -- both iconic D&D monsters (and the illithids have Cthulhu overtones too), plus the original demon princes and archdevils from the 1e Monster Manual.

I also reckon the necrophidius (from White Dwarf's Fiend Factory and the 1e Fiend Folio) was pretty cool.

Cheers

I'm going to cheat a little bit and paste what I've written on another board:

Mine is the Gelatinous Cube. Maybe it's because they are tidy, equal-sided polyhedrons (I also love modrons) and it appeals to my sense of pattern and order. Maybe it's because they are absurd. Maybe it's because it is so obviously a D&D-ism, a monster that lives in a place neatly defined by 5' X 5' squares that often needs to cleaned of loose change, and bodies, lying about. Maybe it's because they are weird in a near-Cthulhu sense, being composed mostly of a living, but mindless, jelly-like substance that is corrosive and near invisible in the dark. Maybe it's because the image of a slowly-moving haze filled with loose objects and bones fills me with dread.

goblins ;)

not really, there are a lot of interesting monsters and It's too hard to pick just one. The tarrasque is kind of classic to me.

Too many to choose from, but for this I'll go Minotaur.

It's a creature of classical mythology, and a tough brute. Great in dungeons for
harrying opponents. Plus, as a Tarus, I can empathize with a bull-headed man. ;)

Tough question. My initial reaction is "too many to choose from", followed by second guessing myself with "maybe none really stand out".

I'd say it depends on edition.

Basic/Expert: Thoul was pretty neat.
1e AD&D: Efreeti
3.X: Harder, as all of the templates and class levels can really muddy what a monster "is". I'd say I really dig putting the half-troll template on most anything, especially ogres and stone giants, but as far a single monster, I'm going with the Ogre Mage.

Pretty boring choices, but man, I've had a lot of fun with those creatures in-game.
