What is Your Favorite IRON DM Entry ?

Wulf, i must say is the exception - i remember one of his early entries with driad, mushroom powder or some such that was excellent.

Also a haunting one.

If I recall correctly, that one lost because there was no way for the players to "win."

I couldn't find it on the archive site, but I really like the one in which two of the ingredients were a dryad and sovereign glue. The entry I particularly enjoyed involved a dryad's oak being built into a ship by use of the sovereign glue and the players being approached by the dying dryad to come save her, but she can't explain where her tree is.

That was Wicht's and I believe it was from the second IRON DM ever - now lost to the fogs of time.

Vaxalon? if i remember correctly, was unbeaten and a 3 time champ or something in the early days before he retired and his entries were always concise and excellent without exception. The recent rounds have sport of seemed watered down as far as quality goes- most of the entries seem to read as one long run on where i loose interest even before the end of the first paragraph.
Wulf, i must say is the exception - i remember one of his early entries with driad, mushroom powder or some such that was excellent.I think there should be an IRON DM champions tourney and someone should talk to Vax about unretiring (also a three judge format would be cool similar to the ceramic DM - seems to balance things more and less hostilities seem to arise).

Vaxalon never had to work his way backl through the ranks from the beginning after his first win - which was later decided to be unfair, as there were times when his only/final entry was not as good as ones that had proceeded his and lost. He was (and still is) always welcome to play (I'd even save him a slot) but he'd have to start with the first round like everyone else. With the skill he has generally shown, I think he could win the whole thing again.

As for "hostilities", I think it has more to do with winning and losing with equal grace regardless of your agreement or disagreement with the judging. God knows I have not always been happy with what IRON DM judge's have had to say about my own entries. :D

There's no question that you have some of the more memorable entries, and are one of the most consistently strong competitors. When looking at one's entire body of work within the confines of Iron DM, I'd also say that Wicht, Pielorinho and Rune, deserve mention with yourself and the esteemed Vaxalon. Enkhido is making a strong showing of late, and despite my lackluster effort this time out I'd like to think that I'm a cut above swiss cheese :D.

Waylander:
I respect your opinion entirely, but my views differ drastically. I happen to enjoy the background detail and history provided as the fabric upon which the rest of the entry is woven. No doubt some of us (myself included) get carried away, at which point we lose some people's interest. That's obviously bad. But IMHO brevity is not always good, especially when a lack of detail or story framework leaves the reader speculating what went on beforehand.

In any case I thoroughly agree that it would be great to see a Champions Tournament done with a three judge format.

Except that judges are taken from among the ranks of the champions - so who would do the judging.

Personally, I am against panel judging. . . first and foremost because it slows things down, especially if all of the judges are expected to write up a detailed analysis of the entries - getting three people who can arrange time to do that within a reasonable timeframe (i always give myself 24 hours from when the entries were due to post the judgment and usually make it :D) will be damn difficult, if not impossible.

Wasn't there a Dryad's-tree-built-into-a-ship scenario in one of the old 1E Book of Lairs supplements?

-Hyp.

Yep, that was why Wicht did not get as much credit in the judgment from me for that idea as some thought he should get - because it was not as original as it first seemed.

I would say that seasong ranks above myself and perhaps one or two others on that list.

You could have the Champions in Bracket A judge the Champions in Bracket B for the first round.

After the first round, the Champions who are eliminated judge the subsequent round.

FWIW, if that doesn't work, I would gladly sit out of competition in order to judge such a tournament. I don't really consider myself anything other than lucky for getting past Round Two on one occasion.
