I choose the first matrix movie.
I would have choosen Reloaded which I thought had more over the top action than the original, except for the fact that it is really part one of a larger movie with Revolutions. Revolutions brings Reloaded all the way down. Biggest let down ever. It makes it hard to watch Reloaded now that I know all the wierd questions won't be answered, the cool matrix fighting won't happen again(I'm sorry but the Goku vs. Frieza errr um Neo vs. Smith fight was sort of stupid and completely too much), and heck it's debateable whether the humans are even saved at the end. It's like having a glass full of punch with a dead fly at the bottom.
If you took everything that happened in those last two movies and shuffled them so that all the good stuff wasn't in reloaded they would be better. It would have made Reloaded weaker, but it would have made Revolutions tolerable. As it is I can't barely even think about wanting to watch the last two movies again. Heck I got Reloaded for Christmas and I still haven't even taken it out of the wrapper.

The first film is easily the best.

The Matrix was great. The 2nd sucked like a black hole. Haven't seen the 3rd, but I suppose I eventually will. I bought Animatrix, but only got through half of it. Some parts were cool, but origin stories of the human/robot war were terrible. Humans were the real bad guys and robots were cute and wore ties? Excuse me, I'm going to vomit. :(

I eventually decided on Animatrix, because some bits in there are really awesome, not just cool. Second Renaissance is very interesting, even if it is just machine propaganda. It also feels like it has a bigger scope than the movies, which, in the end, didn't go as far as they should have. (Mild hijack: I posted a conspiracy theory on my forum a couple of days ago. Might be interesting.)

I was never really worried about Neo, Morpheus, or Trinity in the sequels the way I was in the first film. Agents USED to be scary--in the sequels they were barely speed bumps for all the emotional response they generate in the main protagonists.
that's what i was thinking. didn't Morpheus say in the first movie that everyone who had ever stood up to an Agent had died? didn't everyone used to run from Agents?

in the sequels, both Trinity and Morpheus kicked butt against Agents. i thought one of the major points of the first movie was that only Neo would be able to do that.

i also didn't really care for the revelations that later movies brought. i don't think they added much to the mythos established in the first movie, and in some cases weakened it.

Uh, no they don't.

Trinity got knocked around by Johnson and jumped out of a window and ended up getting shot and dying. Not what I'd call kicking butt.

Morpheus barely held his own against Johnson and was constantly on the edge, if not for a bit of luck and good timing on Niobe's part, and Neo's, would have bought the farm. Not much better than what Trinity manage, and it took quite a bit of luck, good timing, and divine intervention.

As for Neo, well he's by far the most powerful human in the matrix in the second two movies, and one of the most powerful beings period. So agents shouldn't be a threat to him.

The Animatrix gets disqualified for not being a movie, though Matriculated is so bad it would get last place anyway.

And even though it wasn't a movie it was still better than parts 2 & 3 and equal to the 1st. Matriculated was the weakest of the short films however. The thing I liked about the Animatrix is that they only had 10-15 minutes to tell their story. it cut out the needless monologues (remember Morpheus addressing the people of Zion in Reloaded? - *yawn*) and some terribly boring fight scenes (Neo vs. the 3 agents at the beginning of Reloaded - about as much tension as a wet blanket).

I'm having trouble decided between the other two, though I'm leaning toward Reloaded just because the Matrix will garner the most votes.

That's a great reason to vote for something

No, no, no! The robots were cute, wore ties, and arbitrarily killed and enslaved humanity. That makes them the good guys! ... er ... I think.

Bleah. I totally agree. Even overlooking an amazing economics gaffe (01 produced huge volumes of advanced goods at low cost and the humans' quality of life goes down?) about half the viginettes in Animatrix can be summed up as "humans r teh suk" with the other half being "some humans are cool, but they eventually fail anyway." Combine that with ending credits at the end of every cartoon (why not go all the way and have commercial breaks?) and I felt really glad I had only dropped $2 renting it from a video store instead of picking up the DvD.
