A lot of the races have good backgrounds but just not different enough and good enough for me.

That's a different kettle of fish. That's different than being just a bunch of numbers. The non-number stuff may not appeal to you, but it's there. ;)

I voted Warforged. But not because of their abilities. Rather that as a constructed race, they are suddenly having to build themselves a culture and fight for recognition, hwich could make for some really greta stories.

The Elan could have been similar, but they came out too bland.

it is there but it just doesn't seem important or that good...maybe I'm a little numbered out

In the "as intended for their setting" category, I'd have to say Warforged. They're cool.

In the "as adapted by myself for my homebrew" category, then I vote Changeling.

Shifters, Changelings and Warforged. I guess I'm a bit of an Eberron junkie. I like the potential in all those races, though. Probably slightly prefer shifters of the bunch, but that's maybe because I used to play a bit of Werewolf: the Apocalypse before d20 came out.

Well, I didn't think it was the greatest thing since sliced bread, but I didn't see anything wrong with it. In what ways to do feel it fundamentally fails?

I thought the warforged were different (first living construct...ever?). Maybe there was just too much hype prior to Eberron coming out?

One thing that I have against Kalashtar, Xeph, Maenad (you forgot them, Kai Lord), and Elan is that, basically, they're just psionic humans. Totally undifferenciable from humans, but they have psionic powers. I'm not sure it was worth a whole new race.

So, of course, Eberron fully fleshes out the Kalashtars and make them interesting, off-setting this factor. But Xeph and Maenad do not have this luck. Elans are the most interesting of the EPH trio, because they are warped -- a conscious choice from their part, rather than a race. In this, they're a bit like the Mojh from AU/E. But they're made as a race rather than a template -- a shaky design decision, IMNSHO.

If you replace "psionic human" with "arcane human", you can apply the above rant to illumians.
